Joseph closed his eyes, as he felt Fayth enter his mind. ‘I know it won’t be easy.’ He said, ‘but I promise you it will be worth it. As soon as I’m done on Challenger, I’m coming to get you.’

‘If it was easy it wouldn’t be worth it.’ Sharah squeezed his hand and got up to put her plate away. She smiled, ‘I’ll hear you coming. You’ll know where to find me.’ She sat back down at the table next to him.

‘Just take care of yourself Sharah. I won’t be there next time to save you.’ Joseph said with a smirk. ‘No night in shining armor will be there.’

Joseph was only partially joking, she knew because that was the absolute truth. If she wasn’t absolutely careful, he wouldn’t be there. She had tried very hard to keep that from him, not wanting to add to his worries. She had come to rely totally on him to help her control her gift when it was too much. They hadn’t planned it or even thought about, it just had happened. She was going to have to figure that out on her own, but she hadn’t yet. She firmly pushed the thought away. She didn’t want Joseph to know how much the idea of failing to control her gift without him there terrified her.
‘I can’t promise that nothing will happen, but I can promise it won’t be because I wasn’t taking care of myself. I don’t want a knight is shinning armor, I want you,’ Sharah returned his smile. ‘I won’t lie though, the idea of you in shinny metal armor on a white horse is certainly appealing.’

‘Hey, I trust you can handle yourself.’ Joseph said. Taking her hand once more, ‘And you will have me all to yourself one day, just stay alive until I can finish my tour of duty here.’ He looked out his window a moment before continuing. ‘If a recorded message will help with that, I will send you one everyday.’

She laced her fingers though his ‘Then send one every day that you can or write.’ Trying to lighten the mood a bit she smiled sweetly and batted her lashes, ‘I promise to be a good little damsel alive in my tower until you come to rescue me.’ She leaned over and kissed him gently on the cheek. ‘I promise.’

Joseph nearly blushed, he was usually not a fan of sappy language and what he considered to be silly postures of love. In the moment however, he decided he didn’t really mind them all that much anymore. ‘I’ll hold you to that.’ He replied. The young man held onto Sharah’s hand tightly, dreading the moment when he would no longer be able to do so. ‘You know why I asked you out,’ Joseph said, ‘But I don’t know why you said yes.’

Sharah smiled recalling that night, ‘You told me not to be afraid. I saw you come across the room, and you were so focused on something and you were incredibly attractive. And then you sat down a my table and I think I forgot to breath for a moment. You looked right at me and it made me a nervous, for lots of reasons. You seemed to see right through me and you didn’t care what I was, and you still talked to me. And then you told me not to be afraid, and you meant for me to hear it. If I hadn’t got dizzy when I stood up I would have stayed there with you a lot longer. It sounds silly but, for you, I wanted to not be afraid. So when you asked about dinner I dove in and said yes. I think somewhere I recognized the calmness in your mind and I was also very intrigued by that.’

Hearing that filled Joseph with joy. ‘You know, when I was in my last relationship, one of the reasons I tried to make it work for so long after I knew it was over was because I was terrified that I would never find the right person for me. I was scared by the idea that nobody could love somebody who loved being in his own head so much and maintaining such a constant stoic personality.’ Joseph leaned over and kissed Sharah. ‘But now I know that fear was for not, my special somebody was out there, I just needed to wait awhile longer to find her.’

Sharah savored the kiss not wanting it to end. Sharah nodded, ‘I understand. I never had any very long relationships on Betazed. Being able to hear everything they were thinking was acceptable, but they felt I wasn’t interested. They didn’t understand how the constant noise was distracting. I was always a curiousity to them, I knew that and they knew I did. Eventually,’ she shrugged, ‘it wasn’t worth the effort to me anymore. Then I got into the academy and there was no time for anything but study.’ She reached for her glass, ‘what shall we do the rest of the night? It’s still early.’
