Ashlyn couldn’t be more satisfied with herself, she graduated from the academy and had her first ship posting. Sure it wasn’t a direct to Starfleet Intelligence that she had hoped for, but after careful consideration she wasn’t ready for that just yet. There was still too much for her to learn and much growth she needed to make before she could join the ranks of the men and women that preserved the Federation out of sight of the common citizen. After several postings and challenges, she had compiled a final report that she was taking to Lieutenant Rainns. A complete list of common hiding places where she would find random contraband, the places the cadets like to break rules while unobserved, and a compiled list of secondary skills for the Night Watch that Rainns could make more tactical use of. Did he need this report, probably not, did he want it, also probably not. Why go through the effort then, mostly to show that she is paying attention and plans to use the skills she learned on this ship on her next.

Standing outside his door for the final time, Ensign Trenton presses the chime for access to Lieutenant Rainns’s office.

Rainns stared at a datapadd, reading a report. His mind was elsewhere, Fayth’s coming departure was almost entirely taking up his focus. He had to stop every other sentence and reread it just to comprehend what he was looking at. This, for the young man, was a highly unusual phenomena. His chime rang, and Rainns looked up startled, he had no appointments and was not expecting anyone. Still, he could use an interaction to break the monotony and melancholy of the day. “Come in.” he exclaimed.

Ashlyn came into the room and stood before the Lieutenant’s desk at parade rest and offered him the PaDD, “My final report sir, I’ll be departing the Challenger tonight with the rest of the graduates assigned to the Europa. I wanted to take the chance to express my gratitude for your leadership and training as well as make a request if I may be so bold?”

Rainns took the Padd and placed it on his desk. “I appreciate that Cadet, and I appreciate your service, as I predicted, you will make a fine officer some day, and you are taking your first steps down that path now.” He smiled melancholy for a moment, before looking back at Trenton. “What can I do for you?”

Trenton pulled another PaDD from her bag to share with Rainns, “I would like to request a letter of recommendation that I may add to my application package for Starfleet Intelligence. I realize I may still be a ways out from being able to go, but every step of the way I hope to be able to show evidence of my growth and progress. I want to be sure that when I submit my application, that I will stand out from other candidates as more than “that one basket case they interviewed when she made it to earth.” Would you be willing to?” Ashlyn looked hopeful at Rainns, though she didn’t expect anything it never hurt to ask.

Joseph Rainns took the padd and gave it a thorough look over for a few moments. “Ensign, before you worry about what I, or anyone else writes for you, you need to make sure your actions speak for themselves. I am prepared to write said recommendation letter when the time is write. But I want you to go out into mainfleet and live that life for a few a tour of duty before I do so.” He smiled, “But I promise you, I’ll put more than just you are basket case on the evaluation.” He paused for a moment, clearly deciding if he wanted to say something. “There is something I would like from you when you are onboard Europa.” He stated hesitantly.

Trenton chuckled a bit, “As long as you’re not asking me to smuggle special brownies through the Jefferies network, I’ll consider it.” She gestures at the report PaDD, “Next week, 0330, section 4 deck 8. Easy bust.”
