Joseph nearly blushed, he was usually not a fan of sappy language and what he considered to be silly postures of love. In the moment however, he decided he didn’t really mind them all that much anymore. ‘I’ll hold you to that.’ He replied. The young man held onto Sharah’s hand tightly, dreading the moment when he would no longer be able to do so. ‘You know why I asked you out,’ Joseph said, ‘But I don’t know why you said yes.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Sharah smiled recalling that night, ‘You told me not to be afraid. I saw you come across the room, and you were so focused on something and you were incredibly attractive. And then you sat down a my table and I think I forgot to breath for a moment. You looked right at me and it made me a nervous, for lots of reasons. You seemed to see right through me and you didn’t care what I was, and you still talked to me. And then you told me not to be afraid, and you meant for me to hear it. If I hadn’t got dizzy when I stood up I would have stayed there with you a lot longer. It sounds silly but, for you, I wanted to not be afraid. So when you asked about dinner I dove in and said yes. I think somewhere I recognized the calmness in your mind and I was also very intrigued by that.’
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Hearing that filled Joseph with joy. ‘You know, when I was in my last relationship, one of the reasons I tried to make it work for so long after I knew it was over was because I was terrified that I would never find the right person for me. I was scared by the idea that nobody could love somebody who loved being in his own head so much and maintaining such a constant stoic personality.’ Joseph leaned over and kissed Sharah. ‘But now I know that fear was for not, my special somebody was out there, I just needed to wait awhile longer to find her.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Sharah savored the kiss not wanting it to end. Sharah nodded, ‘I understand. I never had any very long relationships on Betazed. Being able to hear everything they were thinking was acceptable, but they felt I wasn’t interested. They didn’t understand how the constant noise was distracting. I was always a curiousity to them, I knew that and they knew I did. Eventually,’ she shrugged, ‘it wasn’t worth the effort to me anymore. Then I got into the academy and there was no time for anything but study.’ She reached for her glass, ‘what shall we do the rest of the night? It’s still early.’
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

‘Well you certainly do inspire a certain sense of curiosity from people.’ Rainns replied. ‘I felt the same way at the academy.’ As she asked him what to do his mind raffled through all there options. ‘Well I certainly don’t want to do anything with a crowd right now.’ Joseph posited. ‘This is our night, so we should do something to reflect that.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

‘I agree. I don’t really like crowds anyway.’ She honestly didn’t care if they just sat next to each other enjoying the silence or music. She didn’t care as long as they were both right here.
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

‘Are you a fan of Earth classical music?’ Joseph asked, getting up from the table and putting his plate in the replicator. ‘I really enjoy it and it would help the void of my quarters right now.’ He turned back towards to Sharah after doing so. ‘We could listen to it for a bit and have some wine, I have a bottle of sweet white that I want to get rid of.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

‘I love Earth’s classical music. What’s your favorite?’ She rarely drank real alcohol because of her gift, but tonight was a good night to have a glass. ‘That sounds wonderful.’

Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Joseph walked into his bedroom and emerged a few moments later with a bottle. ‘I’m a rather big fan of Beethoven myself. I know that’s not exactly a unique opinion, but his music is unparalleled.’ He put the bottle on the table and then went over to his replicator and acquired two glasses. He then poured some of the alcohol into the glasses and handed one to Fayth. ‘I was hoping you would say that.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

‘I think Beethoven is amazing. There is a reason he is well known, he was brilliant. I can listen to the same piece a hundred times and always hear something different, some new subtlety every time.’ She took the glass from him and smiled waiting to see which piece he would put on. ‘Why were you hoping for that?’
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Joseph picked up his glass and put on Beethoven’s 9th symphony. He then walked over to his living area and sat on his couch. He motioned for Sharah to join him. ‘I was, I also hope you won’t mind joining me here. It’s comfortable I promise.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

‘This is one of my favorites.’ Sharah was already sitting down and as usual curled up next to him on the couch. ‘I believe you.’ She sipped the wine slowly enjoying the flavor. ‘This is very good.’
Cadet Fayth, Doctor

‘Thank you, I’ve been saving it for a special occasion, and this seems to be an appropriate one.’ Joseph smiled, ‘I’m going to put that bottle back in storage, and in a few months when I’m off Challenger, we will finish the rest of it.’ Joseph felt that while this was certainly an over-dramatic show of affection, it was a sweet gesture, not to mention a great item to serve as a reminder of what he was working towards after Fayth left. ‘And then next time, it will taste even better.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Sharah didn’t tell him not to save the wine. It was an unusual gesture for Joseph, but she understood the sentiment and agreed with it. ‘We’ll have your spaghetti and finish the wine.’ She sipped from her glass and then laid her head back closing her eyes, the fingers of her free hand moving in rhythm with the music.
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

‘Sounds like a plan to me.’ Joseph said, gripping her hand. With his other he took another sip of wine. ‘When I stop and think about it, I don’t think there is another person I’ve made so many promises to.’ He looked over at Fayth and saw her eyes closed. ‘And I think that’s a good thing.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Sharah peeked at him and caught his eye, lacing her fingers though his. ‘And I cherish each of them.’ She looked at him thoughfully, ‘Are there promises you wish you hadn’t made?’
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Joseph shook his head. ‘No, I would make them all again tomorrow if I had to.’ He himself had asked that question in the previous week leading towards the final night of Fayth’s stay. But he realized that without her he felt he was missing a vital part of himself and his life. The promises were not only commitments to her, but in a sense, they were also commitments to him. Rainns knew he could not be the best version of himself without Fayth by his side. His pride, from time to time, and especially within the last week, had crept up and tried to change his heart on that truth. The promises he made to Sharah was a way to keep himself honest, he would not be full without the doctor’s help, and if he stated it out loud and outwardly acknowledged that fact, it would help prevent the denial of the truth.

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Sharah didn’t really know what to say. She felt the same way, it was like she was going to leave half of herself behind. ‘Oh, I can’t stand it. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry, not tonight.’ She smiled ruefully at him. ‘I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to get frustrated. You are my calmer half.’
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Joseph smiled softly at her. ‘It’s ok if you cry, I don’t want you to bottle up any emotions around me right now. If you feel a certain way, please don’t try to fight it.’ He took in a deep breath. ‘Blocking emotions is my thing, I can’t have you stealing my trademark now.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Her chest felt heavy, she placed her glass on the table, ‘I really need to learn your trademark right now. I could use it tomorrow.’ Sharah really started crying then.
Ensign Fayth, Doctor

Rainns shook his head, ‘No. Don’t let pain push you to be someone you aren’t. Your gift, your identity, your skills, none of them revolve around the strategy to pushing off emotions, but rather channeling them. This bump in the road is just an opportunity for you to experience new feelings that you can learn to cope with, and thus not only learn to be stronger yourself, but also increase your capability of lifting other people in pain up. ‘ He wrapped his arms around and put one his hands on her cheek. ‘ Never change who you are. No matter what anyone says or how you feel, you thrive when you are you, not as anyone else.’

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

Sharah settled against Joseph and tried to just breathe. ‘This is crazy, we both joined Star Fleet knowing we’d get to go different places. I…I guess I just wanted to see them together.’ She was getting frustrated with herself, she accepted she was going to be sad, but it wasn’t going to help her or him to be....close to hysterical. She kept breathing until she was calmer thinking about his words. ‘You keep telling me you aren’t good with your emotions and showing affection and then you say stuff like that.’ The music changed and a piano piece by Beethoven came on, Waltz in E flat Major.
