“Just a moment.” Douglas tries to read through the logs he brought up for specific timing of the events.

(Cadet. Douglas. Science)

Keval came over to Douglas’s station. “Someone turned off the sensor right before an explosion took place? This mine collapse could have been a deliberate act. Keep searching, cadet.”

The Andorian turned to Greiss. “Keep tracking our teams, and pull up the status of all sensors in the tunnel. I want to know if any of them are still disabled.”

As the cadets got to work, Keval tapped his communicator, and opened a channel to Challenger and both of the other away teams. =^= This is Lt. Vras. It is possible some sensors may have been tampered with that allowed for a mine explosion to take place. We are still reviewing the circumstances and the current status of the mine sensors. It is possible this may have been a deliberate act. Take all caution while in the mine. =^=

-Lt. Keval Vras, CE

=^= Nijix to Lt. Vras. I’m starting to suspect that myself. I’ve already notified my teams to be careful and report any odd behavior. The more pieces of this puzzle we have, the better.=^=

  • Lt. Nijix Tavium, CoS

The specific timing was fairly cut and dry, looking more like antiquated technology than deliberate acts of malice. The sensors had been waffling on and off for the last few weeks some lasting shorter some longer. About three minutes before the event, they clicked off. Overlay data from the cameras in the tunnels showed they explosion that then blew out the rest of the sensors that were still working.

From what the computer could put together, the faulty sensor readings were either overlooked or overwritten. Either way disaster struck when the sensors went off line allowing for the conditions to develop that led to the explosion.

(OOC: Grrrr.... I thought I had replied, but I guess I didn’t click submit.)

Keval studied the results, before turning to face the two cadets again. “Douglas, keep reviewing these logs. Pull up personal logs as well as sensor logs. I want to know what was going on here.”

“Greiss, what is the status of the sensors now? I want to know if there’s anything our people should be aware of.”

-Lt. Keval Vras, CE

OOC: Happens to the best of us.

The sensors were pretty much stable. Parts of the mine were fully collapsed but they were otherwise good to go. There was the rescue team down on level two and most of level three was offline.

A thorough search of the personal logs and system logs leading up to this time showed that the company that owned the mine was very lax in their safety standards and were pushing for more and more output, sacrificing safety in favor of speed and profit. Just like a Ferengi, eh?

“Our people seem to be on level 2 still,” Greiss said. “I’m not receiving any sensor signals anywhere below that level though.” He remarked, dissatisfied with the minimal information he could glean from the data. “Everything else is in relatively working order, considering the mine sections were caved in. Running pretty well, all things considered.”

~Cadet Winston Greiss, Engineer.

From Greiss’ position at the terminal he could see the lift sensor go insane as lift got out of callabration. There was nothing for the poor cadet to do, however. As soon at the fault registered the problem with the lift, the problems with the collapsing tunnels also struck. In a matter of time, but his engineering estimation, the whole facility would be sinking into the frozen rocky crust and too unsafe to enter again.

(OOC: You can see that I have trimmed the post back, as it was getting quite long. I could have trimmed it back some more, but I wanted to keep Scott’s character still in there from before his LOA so he wouldn’t be lost from the thread. You don’t always have to do that, though, outside of the Academy. I’m also going to step in a bit more here, since you are both just returning from your LOAs.)

Keval saw the indicators start flashing on Greiss’s console, drawing his attention. “F’larnk,” he said softly to himself as he read the status.

“Griess, see if they at least installed some stabilizers to deal with an emergency collapse,” Keval ordered. “Douglas, go back to the entrance and help get the away team away from the turbolift shaft, and start evacuating the facility.”

=^= Vras to all away team members. This facility is coming down, and is coming down fast. We need to do an emergency evacuation. If Challenger can’t transport us, head straight to the runabout. =^=

-Lt. Keval Vras, CE

Greiss could barely keep composure as his console rattled from the rumbling underneath. While he frantically navigated submenus searching for a stabilizer system, he spoke.
“Sir?” He exclaimed, hyperventilating while he paused. “Are they going to make it out in time? Will we?”

~Cadet Winston Greiss, Engineer.

Tija and her team were already at the entrance to the mine. As she hear Vras voice through her combadge she adjusted her position so that she’d be in his (or one of his cadet’s) line of vision. “My team and I are already here, Lieutenant,” she called out.

~Lt. Tija, CMO

Greiss, looking at Tija, nervously spoke to Vras. “If she has wounded, she needs to move them quickly. From the readings I’m seeing, we don’t have much time to get out of here!”

~Cadet Winston Greiss, Engineer.

Tija shook her head and said in her usual curt way, “If you’re talking about me and my team: We don’t have any wounded. Everyone in the bunker had only minor and superficial injuries and returned to the barracks. But from what I’ve heard a little while ago from Lieutenant Tavium, it sounded like they have several wounded and are still trying to get them out of the mine. But she told me to wait here at the entrance with my team.”

~Lt. Tija, CMO

He grew more and more panicked, rambling words that somehow formed understandable phrases, and after a few seconds, proper sentences. “I understand that I am acting out of line, but wait? I-we need to leave as soon as possible, before we run out of time!”

~Cadet Winston Griess, Engineer

Tija’s eyes flashed dangerously and the petite redhead crossed her arms in front of her chest. “The other team has injured miners with them. I will not stop anyone from leaving before they are back. But I will stay here and make sure that everyone gets to safety.” Not once did the CMO raise her voice and yet it was probably more than obvious how angry she was and that she clearly disagreed with Greiss. She understood that he was worried, panicked really, and at the same time she knew that it wouldn’t be the last time in his career that he would be in a situation like this. Like everyone he needed to learn to keep his emotions in check and a level head in dangerous and stressful situations.

Without another word Tija walked closer towards the entrance to be able to assist the other team the moment they arrived. She’d only leave once they were back. Or if someone physically forced her to.

OOC: My apologies for Tija’s harsh reactions. It’s completely IC :)

~Lt. Tija, CMO
