After gently guiding Tandra with her slickened hand, Aili set the woman down on the sofa. She buzzed with a warm excitement as Mika followed her lead. “This is my side”, she shared as she sat down herself, her expression naturalistically matching her inner feeling. Keen not to lose her edge, she placed a hand back over Tandra’s, which in turn rested on the surface of the seat in the gap between them. Aili was careful to leave Tandra plenty of space to herself although she certainly hoped- a uniquely anxious and anticipatory kind of hope- that said space would shrink in good time.

A thoughtfully pre-positioned PaDD found its way into Aili’s free hand. Resting it on her curled up legs, she began swiftly swiping away at it. In no time at all, the screen opposite the two woman lit up, first with the typical image of the Starfleet delta and then with the opening frames of a 20th century monochrome movie. “It’s called ‘It’s a Wonderful Life…’“, Aili’s hand tenderly squeezed Tandra’s, “and it brings me to tears every time.” A flash in Aili’s eyes of what seemed like anticipatory watering was quickly followed by a chuckle of light embarrassment.

Tandra followed Aili over to the sofa, pausing in front of it as Aili claimed her side. “Oh, your side, huh? Alright, then,” She said, grinning as Aili sat down. Tandra sat down at a similar time to Aili, keeping their hands together, and their shared hands landed neatly in the space between them. Which was about a foot of space. Maybe less. Tandra hoped it wouldn’t stay that way. “It’s a Wonderful Life, huh? It’s not one I’ve heard of, but I’m sure it’ll be a good one,” Tandra said as the movie began to show on the screen. “You crying… that’s got to be…” A cute sight, she thought. Everything Alili did was cute tonight. Tandra, her mind being the wandering thing it was, decided that Aili could throw up, and Tandra would think it was cute. As soon as she saw the opening frames, she fell silent, and fixed her eyes to the screen as if it were an interesting tricorder reading.

Aili felt a glow, flowing from where she held Tandra’s hand, warming her heart. Aili kept quiet as angels appearing as flashing stars conversed on the screen. She chuckled, always amused by the angels. While the scenes transitioned, she whispered: “That’s got to be what?”. She turned to look at the other cadet with raised eyebrows.

Her face flushed brighter. “Got to be what? I didn’t say anything.” She said, and then she turned back to the movie, hoping Aili wouldn’t press it, embarassed.

Several more minutes of the movie went by and Tandra moved closer to Aili, placing their shared hands on her leg. “It’s a good movie, so far.”

The atmosphere was sufficiently dark that Tandra’s blushing went unnoticed. Aili simply gave the matter an internal shrug before returning her gaze to the screen. Her eyes may have been looking elsewhere but her focus was still very much on the other woman. As she was wriggled closer to, Aili bunched up in return until they were brushing shoulders. The movie usually enraptured her but this time she found it difficult to keep her eyes from wandering away from the display. “You think?” She released the pressure by turning again to Tandra and breaking into a grin. “I’m glad you like it. It’s quite an… artifact. I think it’s timeless though. It’s very nice to be able to share it with you.” Over the following few minutes, Aili slowly slid her head lower until it rested neatly against Tandra’s shoulder.

Tandra leaned into Aili, and they ended up sat next to each other, leaning into each other, with Aili’s head on Tandra’s shoulder. “I think so, too. I think any movie this old that’s still around must have… something about it. You know?” She smiled, enjoying the warmth of being so close to Aili.

They watched on as a dance hall of dancers leaped through a parted floor into a swimming pool and a romance began growing between the leads. A thrill rushed through Aili’s stomach as. Turning to rest her chin on Tandra’s shoulder, she spoke gently into the other woman’s ear. “Just think how many people have sat watching this same movie, just like us, in the last four centuries. How much history has gone by. Now us, all the way out here. Doesn’t it just, just…”, she squeezed Tandra’s hand tightly, “…just fill you with wonder?”

Mika nodded, watching the two leads grow closer together. “How many people watched it. How many cried to it, fell in love to it, watched it as a feel good movie…” she leaned into Aili a little further. “Kissed to it…” She smiled, squeezing Aili’s hand as Aili squeezed her.
