“I have a strong interest in both Emergency and Cardio-Respiratory Medicine,” Hayley replied, “but I specialized in Emergency Medicine first. I figured you can pretty much go anywhere from there if you want to after all.”

Hayley Marshall Cadet/Doctor

“Indeed,” Tija replied with another nod. “And being able to handle the pressure and stress of emergency medicine is definitely more than helpful as a Starfleet Medical Officer. But other than that rational part of your decision, what else made you chose emergency medicine?”

~Lt. Tija, CMO

“I guess it really just felt like I could do the most good there.” Hayley answered. “Even as a kid I couldn’t stand seeing people in pain. Being able to relieve that, it’s just…special.” Hayley paused and shook her head a little, “You know, I don’t think I’ve ever said that out loud. I’ve been giving the rational answers all my life. It seemed to be what was expected of me.”

OOC: As you can see I trimmed this thread and put the word (snip) in where I deleted posts. We do this to keep threads from getting too long and thus harder to read.

IC:
“I think that is a very common thing to do, Cadet Marshall,” Tija said with a nod and a small smile. “Not only is it what we often assume people expect, but it also leaves us less vulnerable to stick with the rational answers. And speaking of vulnerabilities, what are your weaknesses and areas you feel like you need additional training or extra support?” While her question was rather blunt, she attempted to convey that the young woman had nothing to worry about by trying to soften her voice slightly.

~Lt. Tija, CMO

Hayley took a moment to think about the latest question, “Bedside manner is always something I am working on, I tend to come across a bit awkwardly at times. I also need to expand my knowledge and experience in treating non-human species. I have only what was taught in the Academy Med School courses and fairly limited actual experience. As much as I would like to study Cardio-Respiratory some day it would be much more practical to focus on that right now.”

Cadet Marshall, Doctor

Tija nodded here and there while taking some more mental notes. “It’s good to have an idea what your weaknesses are and to have a plan how to work on them. We all have them and my motto in training fellow medical officers has always been to weaken weaknesses and to strengthen strengths. Which means I and the rest of the medical department are here to help you achieve the things you want to achieve, but also by pointing out other things you might want to focus on. Does that sound like something that you will be comfortable with?”

~Lt. Tija, CMO

“Most definitely,” Hayley replied with a smile, “Sounds like the best possible way to work and learn at the same time. Your philosophy is very much like my brother’s, despite his field being so different from ours.”

Cadet Marshall, Doctor

Tija nodded and then asked, “Do you have any questions, concerns or ideas or anything else you’d like to talk about?”

~Lt. Tija, CMO

“Not at the moment,” Hayley replied, “I’m sure I will have more questions as things progress. In the meantime what duties would you like me to take on to start with?”

Cadet Marshall, Doctor

Tija nodded. “At the beginning, I’ll assign you shifts alongside myself or any of the medical cadets who have been on board longer. So you can learn the ropes without feeling overwhelmed. Once you feel more comfortable, I’d like you to take over boarding evaluation of other cadets,” Tija replied. “My door is always open, so please don’t hesitate to approach me with anything.”

~Lt. Tija, CMO

“Thank you Doctor, I look forward to getting started. Will you relay the schedule to my Padd then?” Hayley asked. “Do you need me to get started on anything right away? If not I wouldn’t mind just spending some time familiarizing myself with Sickbay if I am dismissed for now.” ~Hayley was impressed with Lt. Tija’s direct manner. She always preferred knowing exactly what was expected of her. It was also clear her offer of support was sincere which was reassuring to the inexperienced physician.~

“I will, yes. Spending time familiarising yourself with Sickbay and the other members of the department is a very good idea and something I’d always highly recommend. After all, in a situation of crisis you need to know exactly where everything is and knowing your colleagues is more than just helpful in those situations as well. If you don’t have any other questions, we should head over to sickbay and finish this with your medical evaluation,” Tija replied, a small smile playing across her face.

~Lt. Tija, CMO

“Works for me,” Hayley replied, “I am sure I will have more questions later, but at the moment I think I am good.” Hayley stood and waited for the senior officer to precede her out of the office before following her into the actual sickbay.

Cadet Marshall, Doctor

“Good, Tija replied simply and rose to her feet. Without another word she started to make her way towards sickbay. Once she crossed the threshold, she briefly stopped and took everything in; taking note of what was going on, where everyone was and what each member of her staff was doing. Spotting Cadet Mika, she walked briskly towards her and by way of a greeting said, “Cadet Mika, could you please take care of Cadet Marshall’s boarding evaluation? I have several reports to finish by tomorrow.”

Mika, who had been walking by at the time, quickly nodded. “Of course, Lieutenant,” she replied, and turned and smiled at Cadet Marshall. “Come on, let’s get this started, okay?”

“Thank you,” Tija said and after saying goodbye to Marshall, returned to her office.

OOC: Normally, I wouldn’t add the last line of my post as I don’t know how another person’s character will react. Yet River (Mika) and talked on Discord and I know she’s going to take over as the sim is almost over and I’ll be leaving the ship. So I took the liberty of adding a sentence that forces her character to agree. As I said, normally a no-go, but if you talked with the other player beforehand in certain situations an option :)

~Lt. Tija, CMO

Leading Cadet Marshall into the sickbay further, she pointed to a biobed and said, “Have a seat. I’m Cadet Mika, by the way, as I’m sure you heard Lieutenant Tija say. I guess you’re Marshall?” She asked as she picked up a PaDD and tricorder, and then turned back towards Marshall.

~ Cadet Tandra Mika, Doctor

Hayley hopped up to the biobed. “That’s me, but please, call me Hayley, I’m not used to so much formality. It’s nice to meet you.”

Cadet Marshall, Doctor

“You as well!” Mika said, and then she smiled. “I like to stick with Mika. It sounds a bit cooler than Tandra, don’t you think?” She asked as she pulled up Hayley’s file on the PaDD. “Is there anything I would need to know to go into your file? Anything like an illness, or change in habits, or interesting trips outside the Federation?” She asked, listing off the standard question. By this point, it was like reciting her own name, she’d done it so many times.

~ Cadet Tandra Mika, Doctor

“Nothing much, I’ve broken the odd bone hiking in the mountains or falling off horses, and this is my first time leaving Earth. I’m now the only member of my family to do so.” Hayley grinned, “The looks on my parents faces when I told them I was going in for Star Fleet were priceless!”

OOC: Medical tricorder would confirm the above. Hayley is healthy but perhaps a bit hungry and dehydrated due to the activity of getting checked in with everyone and forgetting to eat or drink anything due to nerves.

Cadet Marshall, Doctor

Mika grinned. “Honestly, my dad as well. He was absolutely shocked that I wouldn’t be taking over the family business!” She told her. “Okay, I’m just going to give you a scan real quick to make sure everything looks good,” she said, and with that, she stepped forward and ran the tricorder’s little scanner piece down Hayley’s body, near to her without touching her, from her head to her toes.

In a moment the tricorder’s results would show nothing but a minor case of dehydration, and Mika knew that would be insignificant. Hayley only needed a quick cup of water. “Looks all healthy on here! That means you’re fit for duty!” She said, and gave another smile.

~ Cadet Tandra Mika, Doctor

“Awesome,” Hayley replied and then added hopefully, “Thanks. I guess I will see you around the ship then?”

Cadet Marshall, Doctor

“That you will. Good luck!” Mika said, and smiled again.
