On one hand, the timing couldn’t have been worse. On the other hand, the timing couldn’t have been better.

After spending a long trip reviewing personnel files, familiarizing himself with the ship, and getting ready for his first assignment as Executive Officer, Eric had arrived on Challenger only to discover that he arrived at the completely wrong time to report in. While Thomas was wide awake, the rest of the ship was on the night shift, and the Captain was off-duty and most likely asleep. He wouldn’t be able to report in for some time, and having spent the trip reviewing all of those files and stored his his items in his quarters, he - surprisingly - arrived with actual free time.

Which would explain why Eric was standing outside of the holodeck doors while the majority of the ship’s crew was asleep. “Computer, access my personal files and run program Holmman-3.”

The holodeck doors, and the smell of salt from an ocean on Earth came through suddenly, with the sound of a seagull crying out in the sky.

Eric walked into the simulation as the doors closed behind him to find himself on a rocky outcropping overlooking a beach in a cove below. The sun was up in the clear, blue sky, and the waves were steadily coming in and making a gentle background noise. It was good that he had dressed for the occasion - shades, a short-sleeve shirt, trunks, and sandals.

The scene reminded Eric of home back on Earth, and he always enjoyed returning to this scene. He had no plans to exert himself today - heading out to the waves would have to wait for another day - but just standing in the sunshine was enough to relax him after his long trip and get ready for his new assignment.

The holodeck doors opened and Joseph Rainns walked into the Holodeck in his full uniform. He stayed up the night to greet the arriving XO but had become distracted by some tedious busy work in his office. He took a moment to survey the area and then spotted Eric on the edge of the cove, not at all dresses like himself. He made his way over to his XO. “Lovely view.” He said as he approach Holmman. “Reminds me of my home.”

Eric turned around at the sound of the other person, eyebrows coming up. He walked over, his usual grin slightly more pronounced with the drastic difference of attire between the himself and the other officer. “It’s certainly a place I like to come back to, Lieutenant…” he said, sticking out his hand in greeting as his thought back to the personnel files he had spent a full trip studying. “… Rainns. I’m Commander Holmman, the new XO.”

Rainns smiled at his XO and shook his hand. “Joseph Rainns, Chief of Security, but it sounds like you know that already.” He put his hand down. “Were you trying to sneak onto the ship unannounced sir?”

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

“Is that why the chief of security came to check in on me in the middle of the night,” Eric asked, eyebrow raising again. He turned back to the ocean, waving his hand towards the view. “Just taking some time relax after a long trip while I wait for the Captain. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, Lieutenant, its to enjoy moments like this when you can when you’re working on a starship. You don’t get many of them.”
