After a pause, the CSO reasserted her authority as Seezra shoved the rest of the boxes away and closed the doors. “And you will have plenty of opportunities to become acquainted then. Thank you Seezra.” The NEnsign nodded in acknowledgement before smiling once more at the cadet and practically fleeing the lab. McMorran sat and gestured an indication that she wished for T’Mor to join her again. “No hesitation to jump straight in and help there I see cadet. Admirable.” She grinned.

“Now”, the CSO snapped, “you will be spending a great deal of time on deck 4, where the bulk of the bioscience related labs are, and deck 5 in the arboretum. I suggest that you have a good look around and familiarise yourself with those areas as well as the other bioscience labs.”

She waved a hand dismissively and lowered her voice, adopting a more relaxed tone. “But that’s secondary. In my view, it’s far more important for you to settle in and learn how to be a comfortable and valuable member of a crew. I strongly advise that you don’t get so immersed in your work that you fail to find friends. It gets lonely in space. Having a warmth of community to find comfort in is vital.” As she finished sharing her advise, Aili’s eyes wandered to a framed picture in the corner of her desk showing her with another woman T’Mor may have recognised as the chief medical officer.

OOC: Here I’ve applied one last important aspect of the thread writing here. I’ve ‘snipped’ away much of the block of text. This prevents us ending up with finger-killing scrolling to do as thread go on!

One small technical note. When you insert in amongst a previous post we’re doing, you need to leave an empty line above and below, which included making sure there are no > symbols. That’ll put your text ‘in line’ with the rest of your post.

Further, since you’re clearly on top of all the basics, the specifications for the ship can be found in detail here: https://www.star-fleet.com/library/bookshelf/tm/discovery.html This can be useful for reference when deciding on locations etc. and is linked to from the MOTD page :)

bump :)

“I will make an effort to do so,” T’Mor responded as she sat down again. Though she was more talking about exploring the ship than making friends.

“I am familiar with the benefits of maintaining amicable relations with other crew members. Though I hope you understand, and I mean you no offense Lieutenant, not to expect me to outwardly express any emotional attachments.”

It was uncomfortable to have to point this out. Little things like this it seemed she had to clarify, as if she had to keep reminding everyone she was indeed Vulcan. T’Mor knew she was not normal, but being reminded at how obvious this fact might seem to others was unnerving. Her biological species was so explicitly tied to what cultures expected from her, to not conform implied she was less than Vulcan.

McMorran became rather more sharp as she held up a hand in a gesture that said ‘stop there’. “Forgive me Cadet”, she projected, “I didn’t mean to suggest that I expect you to change your nature. On the contrary, the diversity of a Starfleet crew is one of its great strengths. I am sure I have as much to learn from you on the wisdom of Vulcan culture as you do from the vaying worldviews and perspectives of your peers.”

The CSO’s posture retreated as she relaxed back into her chair. A small smile unveiled itself from behind her professional sheen. “I do mean that by the way, that I hope to learn from you. Until now I have only respected and held interest in Vulcan culture from afar. Speaking of the rest of us benefiting from your presence, and do forgive the cliche of an question, but what skills would you say you will bring to this department, your academic talents aside?” The young woman folded some of her loose red locks behind her ear in a subconcious manner, a display of mild anxiety perhaps betraying her inexperience in the position of leadership she was exercising.

OOC: Since several of our posts here have been relatively lengthy, already it would seem an appropriate time to go ahead with another snip of the thread. Why not give it a go, leaving in place the most recent two or so posts as you see fit? :)

Bump

Bump! :)

T’Mor tilted her head ever so slightly, and placed her hands on her lap, fingers interlocking. She stared off for a moment and tried to think of what she considered her skill-set. She tried to avoid boasting as much as possible. So instead she listed off each point rather dryly, as if reading from her resume.

McMorran sat still but not too still, keen to be as unintimidating as possible. In some way she couldn’t quite place she saw her cadet self in the other woman, despite their difference in age and demeanour.

“I am able to work in cooperative settings and independently with equal proficiency. The ability to stay organized and set priorities are also skills I have not only developed but seek to continue to improve upon. In addition, my ability to observe situations and apply logic, while not extraordinary, is sufficient. Overall I tend to work as quickly and efficiently as possible, however, never at the expense of protocol.”

“Excellent, excellent!” Aili smiled warmly. “They are welcoming and open people, those in my department and on this ship, but they’re also sharply professional.” She leaned forward, as if to share some secret inner voice, and whispered. “I think you’ll fit in perfectly.”

The CSO sat back once more. “Well, unless there’s anything you’d like to ask me, I have just one more question for you. I’m here to help you find your feet in Starfleet. We all take different paths, we have different goals and ambitions.” A finger gently poked out from an otherwise clenched hand of Aili’s, pointing at the cadet. “What do you see in your future? The lab, the command chair…” Her prompts tailed off as she waited with genuine curiosity.

OOC: Go ahead and snip the thread down to the most recent couple of posts! It’s a really important thing to be able to do (as trivial as it may seem :D) but it can be surprisingly tricky to get the hang of. But hey, practise makes perfect!
