Eric sat down where Rainns indicated, with a slight sigh. He brushed his fingers through his hair to straighten it out. “Where would you both like to begin,” Eric asked. “The big thing for me: I actually don’t know what the two of us were doing in the hot tub. In fact, I don’t even remember arriving at my quarters last night. I don’t remember drinking, but I guess that could explain it - I certainly have the hangover from it. But suffice it to say, I have no memory of the actual drowning…”

Now that Eric revealed that, he waited for the reaction of both officers…

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

Hilo nodded, doing his absolute best to fight back the thought that popped into his mind of well of course you’d say that. “That’s a good point actually,” he said suddenly, looking at Lieutenant Rainns. “Do you have a tricorder that can read blood alcohol concentration levels? It might be a good idea to get a reading of if there are any toxins, including alcohol, in Commander Holmman’s system.”

Looking back at the executive officer, Hilo pressed the tips of his fingers together. “What is the last thing you remember, Commander? Was there a certain pretext for the reason you and the Ensign were spending time together yesterday evening?” He was obviously implying that it had been a prearranged date.

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

“Ensign Pay,” Eric asked. “I have no idea why she was in my quarters, although I guess it looks pretty obvious… Maybe I met her while I was blacked out? Although that seems a bit odd, even I have to admit. I know how that looks. But from what I can remember right now, I only learned her name when Mika said it in my quarters. Prior to last night, I don’t recall saying more than a few words in greeting to her.”

Eric frowned, closing his eyes for a moment while he tried to piece together his memories. “I got a call last night to come to my quarters. I can’t recall why now. That’s probably the last memory I can make out for certain. It was around… 20:00 hours? Yes, because I remember checking the time just around then to see when the next bridge shift was supposed to start. I was heading over to my quarters to see what the call was about, and… That’s really it.” Eric opened his eyes at that last statement.

“What time did you all get the alerts from me?” Eric asked.

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

The chronometer read about 0730, and it had been about 30 minutes, give or take, since the first call went out.

Rainns sat and listened quietly to both Hilo and Holmman’s statements. Holmman’s lack of memory made sense to him, if Joseph had been found with a body in his room he also would claim not to remember what happened. He pocketed his doubt in the moment. He simply nodded as Holmman talked. “0700 hours.” He replied to Holmman’s question, keeping a stern expression trained on the XO as he talked. “Do you remember who placed the call to you at 2000 hours sir?” He asked, his tone neutral, as Rainns was doing everything in his power to not sound incredulous. Holmman’s answers were not satisfactory to the Chief of Security. Rainns was not in the mood for his ‘I can’t remember’ routine he was doing.

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

“No, I don’t. That’s my last specific memory, but it’s already hazy at that point,” Eric replied. “I don’t know if was Ensign Pay or someone else who called me. If I met Pay on my way to my quarters, then who was it who called me to my quarters? And if I met Pay in my quarters, that might explain our actions next, although it still seems unlikely to me that I wouldn’t even remember that. And I would have thought there would be some type of alert before she drowned in the hot tub…”

Eric was patient, and he understood Rainns’ suspicion to some extent - although unless Rainns thought the XO deliberately drowned the young ensign, Eric wasn’t sure where Rainns was going with that hostility - but work needed to get done here. However, he waited to see what Rainns and Hilo decided next…

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

Hilo looked at Rainns for a second before turning his attention back to Holmman. The counselor was much more reserved and stone-faced than usual, likely betraying his discomfort with the whole situation. “Have you had instances of blackouts like this before, Commander? Whether alcohol was involved or not, have you known yourself to lose awareness and recollection of events? No matter how rare the occasion.” He hadn’t seen any such indications in Holmman’s medical and psychological records, but if there were previous episodes that had less disastrous results, Holmman might not have reported them.

(Lt. Cmdr. Hilo, Counselor)

=/\= Zenzgii to Rainns, I understand there’s been a submission for a workup of the XO’s bathing unit? Please notify me when its clear to enter the space and i’ll get my team right on it. =/\=

Zenzgii, CE

Joseph Rainns swiveled his display screen towards him and began looking through the ships internal comm records, he wanted to find the exact call Holmman was referring to. As he combed through Zenzgii’s transmission came through. =^= Rainns to Zenzgii, I will do so, there is already a team there so unless I am mistaken you can send yours there as soon as they clear out.=^= He looked over to Hilo nodding at his question, the counselor was asking the right questions, so Joseph simply looked over at Holmman, awaiting his response.

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

“No…, not history of blackouts, well not like this. I have a family history with neurological diseases, but –” Eric was cut off by the comms.

=/\= Davis to Rainns. I require an update as to your investigation. =/\=

Davis, CO (crosspost)

-Cmdr. Eric Holmman, XO

Rainns waited for the internal ship communication records to show a call to Holmman on the date in question. He looked up at the sound of the Captain’s voice. =^= Rainns to Davis, Counselor Hilo and I are interviewing Commander Holmman and collecting his statement. =^= He looked to Holmman, “Don’t let that stop you commander, please continue.”

Lt. Jg. Joseph Rainns- COS

=^=McMorran to Rainns. It may be relevant for you to know that the security feed of the XO’s quarters appear to have been compromised.=^=
