A couple of dozen off duty members of the Challenger’s complement were kicking back in the Nine Forward lounge. Their conversations, some hushed, others roudy, filled the open space like a heavy cloud. Dim lighting accentuated the venue’s evening identity as a bar, albeit with a distinct lack of booze. That low illumination highlighted the sharp bright lines that streaked by beyond the large windows as the ship cruised at warp.

Aili McMorran was sat on a bar stool, leaning on her shoulder and twiddling with a finger one of her red locks. The woman sighed contently as she dropped a chip into her mouth, enjoying the texture and heat of the spicy sauce that had been drizzled over the bowl of fries. She was dressed in a dark jumpsuit, comfortable yet practical and protecting her from the occasional chill that would attack her in the long corridors of the ship. Not even the sophisticated environmental controls of a craft like the Challenger could quite overcome the age old enemy of all living beings: the draught.

The physicist’s eyes rocked between sitting shut and watching the door to the corridor with warm excitement.

Kyle entered Nine Forward with a stretch, looking around to see anyone he recognised. After a few seconds, he caught the eye of Lieutenant Ali McMorran, the Challenger‘s cheif science officer. He smiled and made his way over to the barstool.

“Is this seat taken?” He asked with a smirk.

Her dreamy bubble burst, Aili found herself simply looking at Anders, blinking.

“Actually, it is,” said Mika, seemingly materializing behind Kyle. She didn’t want to seem uninviting or mean, but she looked forward to her alone time with Aili too much to not say anything. “I’m sure your fellow Cadets would like to get to know you? I’m sure Lieutenant McMorran would be glad to hang out with you… later.” She said, as politely as possible, looking at Aili. She didn’t mean to speak for her, she knew Aili was more than capable of handling herself.

Kyle had to grab the bar to stop himself from falling off the stool, “Bloody hell!” he exclaimed. Sure enough, he turned around to find Lieutenant Mika standing close behind him. He suddenly felt very embarrassed, why was it that, every time he tried to be sociable with Lieutenant McMorran, Lieutenant Mika always came up into conversation somehow. Anders righted himself and tugged his uniform jacket straight, before rising to let the Cheif Medical Officer take the stool.
“My apologies,” he said with as much politeness as he could muster, “Enjoy your evening… ma’ams.” Kyle turned to the replicator, ordered a synthaholic root beer and went to the nearest empty table he could find.

Aili was still attempting to open her mouth. Apparently, in this particular moment, Aili was not in fact capable of speaking for herself. Eventually, she managed to lift a finger and utter “I” but Kyle was already gone.

Hilo smiled over his cup of hot chocolate as he witnessed the exchange. McMorran and Mika could be an intimidating pair. The counselor rose from his chair and moved to sit across from Cadet Anders, his PaDD stuck under one arm. “May I?” he asked, although he was already seated. “I’m impressed that you approached a senior officer,” Hilo said with a twinkle in his eye. “I’m sure Miss McMorran appreciated the gesture, but her and Miss Mika don’t get much time together. I hope you aren’t dissuaded from trying again another time.” The risian man took a sip of his hot chocolate and leaned back in the chair, his dark eyes watching Anders with a hint of a teasing tone to his expression.

Kyle was surprised to see the Ship’s Counselor standing across from him, but smiled and gestured to the seat across from him, “Be my guest sir,” he said politely, he couldn’t help but smirk and followed up with, “I’ve always done my best to be a people person.” An idea suddenly popped into Anders’ head, he stood and turned to address the Risian.
“Counselor, are you busy with appointments this afternoon?”

As soon as Cadet Anders had left, Mika took her place on the stool. “Ahhh. Finally, time to relax a little, huh?” She said to Aili. Turning to the bartender, she ordered herself a synthehol drink - a sangria, before turning back towards Aili.

Hilo looked up and blinked as Anders stood, then followed his lead as he continued to drink his beverage. “I’m done for the rest of the day, I have notes to write but I can do those later. Why, what did you have in mind?” The counselor seemed perplexed, but amused and curious as to Anders’ intentions.

Aili turned to Tandra, inadvertently showing off her light blush which well matched her red hair. Rather than giving a verbal welcome, she continued her wordlessness and simply smiled warmly in a manner that said: “Hi! Sorry about that. I’m so happy to see you!” After reaching for a chip and making sure it was well smothered in the spicy sauce she held it up near Tandra’s mouth, her eyebrows raised themselves expectantly.

Kyle smirked, “Would you care to accompany me to Holodeck Two? You seem like you might be a man with some musical talents.”
