Matthew blinked. “Yes. Riley, Matthew, Cadet.” He looked from her to the table where the hologram had vanished. “Um, reporting for duty, lieutenant.” He placed an isolinear chip - containing his orders, Academy record, educational record, and service record from his prior two Academy cruises - on the desk near the door, and glanced again at the oval table. “I, uh, apologize for interrupting.”

McMorran slung the towel around her neck before she swept by him to shut down the holographic display, lifting the chip as she did so. “Yes, no. Not at all. Thank you for your promptness. It’s I who should be sorry or the, uh…” A hand ran through her hair, the ginger mess freshly released from a ponytail. “Lack of professionalism.”

Matthew shrugged. “You’re actually in the lab, which is a change of pace from my previous rotation.” Matthew wrinkled his upper lip and gave a small chuckle. “I’m not sure that guy even liked science.”

He paused a heartbeat, unable to stop from running a hand through his blond hair. She was clearly as embarrassed at being interrupted as he was at doing so. Tension reduction, tension reduction, his mind screamed.

He cleared his throat. “Excellent form.”

Definitely more casual than my last assignment, he thought.

Aili couldn’t help but chuckle at Matthew’s comment. “Aha! Well, thank you.” A holographic display of a star flooded into existence above the central table, spinning slowly. “As you can see, this lab has fairly advanced holographic functionality. Sometime I… exploit that to work off some steam.”

She smiled to the cadet, piecing back together her persona as the CSO. “If you want you can come back another time but so long as you don’t mind…” McMorran gestured along the length of her body. “…we can talk now.”

“No… that’s… fine,” he responded, staring over her shoulder. Matthew admired the spinning stellar simulation, whistling lowly. “I’d have loved one of these in university,” he muttered, walking past her to get a closer look. While LCARS monitors provided a three-dimensional “display”, full-blown models were always better. He bent over, viewing it from different angles. “Is it a tactile display, or visual only?” he asked over his shoulder. “Fully programmable and modelable, or static?”
