The screen lit up in Eshrallias’ office. A bald, blue Bolian woman of advanced age squinted into the screen. She knocked on the display. =^= Hello, did I get through? These newfangled gadgets. =^= By her appearance and wrinkles she looked not unlike a withered grape that was not helped by the crisp white lab coat that she wore that bore a Commander’s pips almost as an afterthought. =^= Lota here. Fleet Science. Now that is not Lota as in ‘lowtah’ but ‘lotta’. But have I got a mission spec for you! =^= She peered into the screen again. =^=If there is someone there. =^=
- Cmdr Lota, Fleet Science Division

=/\=I am here, Commander.=/\= Eshrallias had watched as the Commander struggled with the technology before her. It did not so much as elicit a smile from the Lieutenant, who seemed somewhat sympathetic to the case. Studying the Bolian woman, who made great emphasis on the nature of her name’s pronunciation, she leaned forwards, as to make certain Lota could see her. =/\=I am listening, Commander Lota.=/\= She pronounced the name as closely as her slight accent would allow, but managed something more along the lines of ‘law-teh.’

Lota leaned in too and squinted. Satisfied that Eshrallias was there she gave a grandmotherly grin. =^= Oh Lt I envy you in this mission. Science on steroids. The place, Craxus III is like the Galapagos. So much good stuff there. The SeaHawk is a science ship. Sure it does exploration and it does experiments and such. All that hush hush stuff. Oh you didn’t hear that from me. =^= She waved a think blue hand dismissively. =^= Fleet has two digs going on archaeologically. The sea life there is amazing. The system itself is a jigsaw puzzle just waiting to be figured out. But I diverge. Yes, it’s a Bolian thing. So out of all that I have something challenging for you, and, alternatively something rather more mundane provided that you have time and people. The latter is to assist in a kind of persistent barnacle issue that the SeaHawk gets. The former is much more interesting. There are creatures there - whales but big. They travel only in large pods and they emanate a kind of ‘interference’ signal that gets in the way of transmissions and transports and even interfere with power. A kind of bubble as it were. What we’d like you to do is to figure out how to, and implement, a way to tag at least one of them - that way the SeaHawk can plot where they are and either navigate around or schedule around them. How’s that for catching the big fish, Lt? =^=
- Lota

=^=Alas, I admit. I have never fished before, in any sense of the word.=^= Eshrallias leaned back for a second, considering what she was saying. Creatures larger than whale? What breed of whale? Regardless if it were larger than the ancient Blue Whale, or the Humpback, or whatever it might be, something larger than a whale was undeniably impressive and worthy of study. Of course, it wasn’t as if Eshrallias would be studying these mammals, rather helping track them so somebody can. =^=It seems a nice challenge for my officers and I to work on. After all, I doubt any of us have dealt with animals that give off interference towards inanimate objects. Of course, there are a few known to us, creatures larger than the Terran whale? Now that, Madam, is fascinating.=^= There was excitement behind her cool demeanor. Of course, it wasn’t that much of an interesting task, and she doubted it would prove a scientific dilemma, but the sheer hope of being able to gain more information on these creatures, once they can be tracked, was exciting. =^=I am more than willing to assist them with this. Although, I do ask, will Endeavour be given any information on these creatures? If they can emanate that kind of interference, they have to be interesting life forms.=^= It was the biologist biologist talking in her.

=^= The SeaHawk CSO evidently has some data on them. What we have is snippets of it as they have had issues with getting near to them enough to do much study. Hard to tag something when the tag power fails, or the drone power fails as it gets close to them. But that is your challenge. I can send some images to you to get an idea of what you are operating with. All I can say is, happy hunting. =^=
Lota

=^=I look forwards to getting those pictures, Commander.=^= Eshrallias returned, inclining her head towards the Bolian woman. =^=Thank you.=^=

Lt. Eshrallias

A short time later there came a transmission to Eshrallias from Lota. In it were compiled almost an hour of still shots and short videos of these ‘whales’. Scale was difficult to tell in them as there was only themselves to compare with. Whatever their size they were like nothing a ‘whale’ might be compared to besides the size.

Not mammalian in nature they were a mix of what appeared to be reptilian with shimmering translucent scales. The front maw had an opening that was less a mouth and more like four sections opening in unison with jagged, small teeth in rows. It’s body was long and sleek, with a tail end propelled like a jellyfish than ending in a tail. It moved in slow, fluid jerks forward. Were there eyes they weren’t so much seen, and at its snout was a range of long catfish like antennae.

Eshrallias leaned closer, studying those scales with close precision. If there was going to he any sort of tracking device set on this whale, or whatever it was, it would have to be strong enough to penetrate those scales. However, getting to those scales in the first place, would he a challenge all in its own. Looking through the videos, she glances about to see if there way anything gauging the speed of these creatures, when they were in need of using their strength in the motion. That interference cloud? One thing at a time.

Their pace was leisurely and the way that the ‘tail’ section flowed was smooth. In one scene a smaller creature flitted around a larger one. In this its movement was not dissimilar but faster. What was more, it seemed to have its maw open - it appeared to move much faster than its design and bulk might otherwise allow.

Quirking an eyebrow, Eshrallias found it common albeit still a bit interesting, as to how the creature move about. Turning away from the videos, she looked to see if any information was sent over about the interference cloud. It seemed its speed wouldn’t be too huge of a problem, from what she could tell thus far.

Notations suggested that the interference cloud varied. There was a variability in both the size of the creature and the number. Where there was a single creature there looked to be a measure of size with the radius not being on a straight line with bulk, but peaking at about mid size then growing on a smaller curve. Unfortunately the ratings were not ‘solid’ and needed more research. As well, the number of creatures in the pod greatly increased the range as though numbers amplified what they had.
