“Hobbies? I do not really have any, per se,” Kanto replied, obviously uncomfortable with the question. “After work, I eat, read up on the latest science updates, and meditate. I have engaged in the occasional game of three-dimensional chess and kal toh, if that is what you mean?”

Liadra nodded a bit. “Yes, that sort of thing is what I mean. What about physical activities or anything social?” she asked. It was common for many introverts like Kanto to not engage heavily in the social side of a ship, but total isolation outside of work could end up being a problem.

“I do exercise regularly and I do occasionally eat in the cafeteria. I do not actively tell anyone to leave me alone, but I do not actively seek the company of others.” He was unsure where this line of questioning would lead, so he added, “Is that sufficient?”

The Denobulan gazed at him intently for a moment before her face stretched into an enormous grin. “I don’t know, is it? Seeking her approval was such a reflexive thing for people to do in her office, but Liadra wasn’t assigning points or keeping score. It was perhaps one of the harder things for people to wrap their minds around and believe, but Liadra really wasn’t putting people through some predetermined test. Was there a pass/fail outcome here? Most of the time, but psychology was as much about nuance as it was understanding. All she wanted right now was to understand the being before her in order to make a fair assessment.

Kanto considered her a moment before answering. “I believe it is.. for me anyway,” he began, “I would consider myself fairly awkward in what would be considered social situations.”

“You wouldn’t be the first,” she said with a light grin. “But when you say awkward, what do you mean? What does that look like for you?” What one person considered awkward could be vastly different for another and sometimes it was a personality thing and other times cultural differences infused themselves into interactions. Knowing what his particular challenge looked like would allow her to help address any concerns there, if any.

“I am not sure what it would look like from an outside observer,” he began, “But I have been known to miss out on the subtleties of emotion. As a Vulcan, I know what emotion is, I have experienced emotions… but my experience is fairly limited. Emotional outbursts were discouraged in my family. It is why I am conflicted now. I failed to take the final test of the Kohlinar before I left the homeworld. My duty is with Starfleet now. It will be some time before I would be able to go back and finish the purge.”

As Kanto spoke, he realized that his thoughts were all over the place, and he felt as if he was opening a floodgate to everything he was experiencing. All the awkward feelings he felt had come to the forefront. It was time to close the gate again, so he composed himself, and this time, it could almost be visible to the counselor. Inside, he felt conflicted, but outside, he was the almost perfect image of stoicism.

“I believe it would look something like that, Counselor,” he said in a very professional manner. “I apologize for my outburst.”
