“Barvan, ma’am. As for your question, I joined the Starfleet Academy after I earned a scholarship in my mid-teens. See, I won a mind-reading competition at fifteen, outwitting Betazoids up to twice my age. Starfleet took notice and made sure I found my way into the Starfleet Academy. Given my love for physical activity and my proficiency with science, particularly forensic science, I was sorted into Security.

OOC: I’m sending you a quick email via the contact form, so look out for that. Sometimes they sneak into people’s spam by mistake.

Liadra considered the cadet before her carefully. She herself was a pretty open book in terms of her emotions and she didn’t mind people knowing them. But she also knew how to keep things less conspicuous if needed. “I’m curious how you are dealing with the discomfort many species have with having their minds read. I do know that Betazoids have a great deal of respect for people’s privacy though. Is that the same with you, or do you feel all minds are yours to read if you wish?” Her tone was more curious than accusatory though and her expression and emotions certainly matched.

“I was taught from a very young age that if you want a non-mind-reader to appreciate your presence and not treat you as a potential nuisance, you should make very clear that you’re not reading their mind and not imply you are.”

Pause.

“I won a mind-reading competition on Betazed at 15 outwitting thirty year-olds. I’m in the top one-percentile of Betazoids when it comes to this. I chose the specialty of security officer so I can use this ability a lot without being seen as a potential threat.”

Her grey eyes gazed at him intently and there was a subtle spark of confusion that went through her that did not show on her face. “You’ve spoken about this competition twice now and we’ve been talking only a couple minutes. What do you think that achievement says about you as a Starfleet officer?”
