“Barvan, ma’am. As for your question, I joined the Starfleet Academy after I earned a scholarship in my mid-teens. See, I won a mind-reading competition at fifteen, outwitting Betazoids up to twice my age. Starfleet took notice and made sure I found my way into the Starfleet Academy. Given my love for physical activity and my proficiency with science, particularly forensic science, I was sorted into Security.

OOC: I’m sending you a quick email via the contact form, so look out for that. Sometimes they sneak into people’s spam by mistake.

Lt. Cmdr. Liadra, CNS

Cadet Barvan, Security

Liadra considered the cadet before her carefully. She herself was a pretty open book in terms of her emotions and she didn’t mind people knowing them. But she also knew how to keep things less conspicuous if needed. “I’m curious how you are dealing with the discomfort many species have with having their minds read. I do know that Betazoids have a great deal of respect for people’s privacy though. Is that the same with you, or do you feel all minds are yours to read if you wish?” Her tone was more curious than accusatory though and her expression and emotions certainly matched.

Lt. Cmdr. Liadra, CNS

“I was taught from a very young age that if you want a non-mind-reader to appreciate your presence and not treat you as a potential nuisance, you should make very clear that you’re not reading their mind and not imply you are.”

Pause.

“I won a mind-reading competition on Betazed at 15 outwitting thirty year-olds. I’m in the top one-percentile of Betazoids when it comes to this. I chose the specialty of security officer so I can use this ability a lot without being seen as a potential threat.”

Her grey eyes gazed at him intently and there was a subtle spark of confusion that went through her that did not show on her face.

Seeing her gaze stop for a moment, Barvan inferred she was thinking something. He then proceeded to slice into her psyche to see what it was.

But Liadra was far too-trained to allow him entry without her say so. Now, he could force his way through, but that would be a breach of telepathic ethics and if he went that far, she would definitely have concerns.

“You’ve spoken about this competition twice now and we’ve been talking only a couple minutes. What do you think that achievement says about you as a Starfleet officer?”

Lt. Cmdr. Liadra, CNS

“It’s something I’m very proud of and it is something that Starfleet Command is, according to word on the street, is watching intently. I thought I should mention this ability because it is a vital part of my psyche and I feel the CNS assigned to me should know about it.”

Cadet Barvan, Security

“I see. And what else do you think you have to offer Starfleet. Surely that competition alone isn’t the only reason you were given admission?” Competition to gain entrance into the Academy was fierce and not only did you have to have strong academic records, but you had to prove you were a well-rounded individual. She was most definitely curious to see how he saw himself here.

Lt. Cmdr. Liadra, CNS

“I was admitted into a forensic science bachelor’s program at the Starfleet Academy. My good academic records, mixed with my telepathic ability, is what got me in.”

A chime at the door interrupted the session. The comm was tapped and the female voice outside the door sounded winded and stressed. “Doctor… It’s NE Bridgets… You are desperately needed in security! NE Ambers has a phaser out and swears we’re trying to kill her.” The words were cut short and the silence was as hair raising as the choice had been.

The Councilor excused herself a moment and went to the door. After a very heated and hushed conversation, Liandra took off out the door with a quickly hollered been for forgiveness.

The NE security officer stepped into the room. “The Lieutenant Commander asked me to please apologize and see that you questions are answered.” The red head stood a couple inches over five and a half from tall. With crystalline blue eyes flecked with green and a smile that was warm and genuine, the NE moved over to where Barvan was sitting.

“I’m NE Bridgets, but you can call me Claire. I’m guessing you’re the new security member everyone is chatting about.” She perched on the edge of a nearby chair and tugged down her pristine tunic front. “Welcome aboard.”
