Torias always undervalued the counsellors while he was at the Academy. It wasn’t until he had served on a ship that he had realised how helpful it was to really talk to someone, especially when everyone you would usually talk to about problems were lightyears away. Spending some time on a serving ship quickly taught him the value of these sessions, but it never made them any more enjoyable.

Torias appreciated having someone to talk to, but was never a fan of the mandatory part of that. However, he understood the need.

Approaching the counselor’s office, he pressed the chime and waited for a response.

Kay looked up as she heard the door chime. She let out a small sigh and noted that it felt like she would never get through the large stack of paperwork that came with assuming the counselor role on a new ship. Being responsible for the mental health of several senior officers as well as a large collection of cadets felt like the weight of the world at times. And this was supposed to be an easy posting, a break after several long years of service on various Starfleet ships.

“Come in,” she called, reluctantly setting down a PaDD and looking up at the door to see who was on the other side.

Entering the room was a rather tall trill, with an athletic build. Tanned skin, and black hair that was neatly combed. “Sorry to disturb you, commander, I’m the new chief of security coming aboard. I was just reporting in for the psychological evaluation, but if you’re busy we can always get that done in a few hours when you’ve caught up with everything,” Torias said in a soft but low voice, seeing the building paperwork on the desk as he entered.

Kay momentarily looked taken aback at Paron’s words, but quickly, her lips turned up in a pleasant smile as she realized that her dark mood had impacted the young officer in front of her.

“Oh no, Lieutenant, it’s fine,” she replied, her soft voice confident. She was dressed in a Starfleet uniform featuring the teal of medical with her Lt Cmdr pips shining brightly on her collar. Her dark brown hair was neatly pulled back and she had the deep black eyes typical of a Betazoid. Her office was still quite utilitarian and impersonal, showing that she hadn’t had much time to get unpacked yet. Two standard issue Starfleet chairs stood, one on each side of the functional desk. Empty shelves decorated one wall and a small sitting area had two more comfortable looking easy chairs with a small table in between them.

“Please come in,” Kay continued. “Let’s get you all cleared for duty so that we can both get acclimated to a new ship.” Her voice was friendly, but at the same time, quiet and firm. “Do take a seat,” she instructed, anticipating that she would adjust her own seated position to whichever option the COS chose.
