“Do you feel that you are qualified for the position?” she asked, curiously.

Lt Cmdr Adrie, CNS

“I meet all of the Starfleet requirements for the position, if that is what you are asking. I also hold high honors on Vulcan from the Science Academy and was posted on the Lakur under the supervision of Krynvok for thirty years before I decided that joining Starfleet was the right decision for me.” He stopped abruptly as he must have realized that he may have offered more than was needed for the question.

Just as Kay had been about to let out an exasperated sigh at the Vulcan’s perfunctory response, her ears perked up at the information regarding his decision to join Starfleet. While an overview of his background had, of course, been part of his service record, there hadn’t been any information on why he had joined Starfleet. She took a moment to enjoy a sip of tea, intending not to seem too eager to jump on this tidbit of information.

“Why did you decide to join Starfleet, then, Lieutenant?” she queried, deciding that line would be hopefully more productive than pushing on whether he personally felt capable to be a department head.

Now that was a loaded question, but the counselor had no way of knowing that when she asked. Kanto regarded her with a slightly quizzical expression, then raised his eyebrow and took a sip of his tea before answering the query.

“I felt that mapping spatial anomalies in the Briar Patch was not as useful as I could be, especially with my expertise in the fields of Astrophysics, Astrobiology, Stellar Cartography, and Temporal Causality. With Starfleet, I would be able to use that expertise to contribute to the universe as a whole. And working under my father was contradicting what that path would lead to.”

Kanto let that sink in for a moment before continuing. “It is worth noting in your report that I have not had the chance to finish the ritual of Kohlinar and achieve true logic. Therefore, I apologize for any emotional outburst I am having.” His expression never changed while he said this, and he remained stone-faced as he opened up to the counselor.

Kay tilted her head to the side again as she listened to Kanto relay his motivations for switching to Starfleet. They seemed oddly impersonal on the surface, although there was a hint of something more underlying it. She didn’t react when he related the information regarding Kohlinar and instead opted to shrug slightly at the CSO.

“I don’t typically note much in my reports other than whether you’re cleared for duty or not, Lieutenant. The specifics stay between you and me,” she commented, simply. “What’s the nature of your relationship with your father?”

Lt Cmdr Adrie, CNS

Her statement regarding his privacy seemed to satisfy Kanto, and he appeared more at ease. Well, for a Vulcan, at least. “I am not sure,” he began, answering Adrie’s question. “We have not spoken since I decided to join Starfleet. He was vocal in his disapproval of my decision and when I attempted to help him understand my thoughts, he left Vulcan to continue the research aboard the Lakur.”

“Ahh,” Kaylee responded with a soothing tone. “Well, you’re not the first Starfleet officer to have a disconnect with a parent,” she added with a small smile. “Is there anything else you’d like to discuss or shall we call this complete?”
