“The pleasure is mine Ma’am” Buckingham spoke in a cordial and welcoming manner. “I’m Dr. Thomas Buckingham, but most call me Tom.” He smiled. “I assume that I’ll have the pleasure of performing your Boarding Physical?” He asked.

Liz laughed. “Well if you think boarding physicals from obstinate patience is a pleasure, then you just hit the jackpot. I had actually just planned to drop off my departure physical info stick and head to the bridge. I take it that’s not happening?” She raised an eyebrow in query wondering if perhaps this doctor would let her go or insist on following procedure. She hoped the latter. But in any case, it was an intriguing prospect to see how many of the crew were skittered by rank officers.

Buckingham smiled “Unfortunately, we both know that it would be a gross breach of professionalism and protocol for me to allow you to board without a physical. However, rest assured that I shan’t take up too much of your time” Tom said lightly.
“If you’d follow me…” Tom grabbed a PADD and walked over to a bio bed “And take a seat, and we’ll get it out of the way” Tom Chuckled.

Liz nodded and followed him. “Well then.. .let’s not create a gross breach of protocol, shall we?” A small laugh bubbled up her throat as she hopped up on the bed. “So how do you enjoy the Endeavour?”

She watched him prep the padd and scanner. He would see the usual childhood immunizations still swimming around in her and a sprain in her wrist from several weeks ago sustained in a fall.

Buckingham opened the Tricorder and began scanning, watching as the information appear on it’s screen. “I really am enjoying myself here” Tom said. “I find that I’ve adjusted to life aboard a vessel and fitted in with the crew better than I ever thought I would.” Pausing for a moment, Tom scrutinized some of the readings coming through. “What brings you to the Endeavor, Ma’am” He asked, interested to learn the events that brought her here.

He would see the usual childhood ailments as well as a sprained ankle that was perhaps two months healed. Records indicated it was from a sparring incident. Other than that and a mild warning to watch her blood sugar, there was nothing really out of the ordinary.

Tom continued to watch at the results poured onto the screen.

“I came to see about helping those who were interested, in finding their feet to travel beyond the rim of Earth. What you learn at the Academy is a great and necessary thing. But sometimes, well, most of the time, that isn’t reality when you are in space away from the instructors and text books. I want to help mold those who will one day mold those who come after them.” She wondered what the man would think about someone who was sitting here telling him that what he learned wasn’t all he needed to succeed out in the deep of space.

“I couldn’t agree more” Buckingham said. “It is but one thing to read about something, and another to actually experience it” Tom paused a moment, looking over the last few pieces of data that appeared on the Tri-Corder. “Well Ma’am, I hope you’ll enjoy your time here on the Endeavor”.

He closed the Tri-Corder and placed it in his Lab Coat pocket. “I’m quite satisfied that there is no need for concern here” He Smiled. “Have you anything else that you’d like to raise with me whilst you’re here?” He asked, giving the XO a chance to voice any issue or query, medical or otherwise.

Liz smiled. “Well I am glad I am not the only one who understands. Thank you, Doc, but I think you have done your due diligence and I am glad for it. By the way, it’s nice to know there is someone else on this ship who doesn’t think this is how it ‘always’ is.” She nodded to him and slid off the table. “I am sure we will see plenty of one another around the halls. I wish you well and thank you for your time.”
