James Mason was born in 2359 on the world of Volan III in the Demilitarized Zone as the second son to his parents. His home life was happy, but the threat of conflict reigniting between the Cardassian Union and the Federation always present. This cast a pall over the family, and James remembered this being something that a common point of discussion between his dad and oldest brother. Peace temporarily came when the Federation and Cardassian Union signed an armistice, and hope began to grow within his family and town. He remembered that his mother even made a special dinner in celebration and his entire family was happy and laughing.
This period of hope died a brutal death when the Federation-Cardassian Treaty of 2370 was signed, and fear swept through Volan III. His mother and father were always up late talking, and his brother was always leaving with friends. One day though, his eldest brother didn’t come back and things broke within the household when news came that Matthew was dead at the hands of a Cardassian criminal. James’ mother grew withdrawn while his father was angry and railed against the Cardassians, Cardassian Union, and Treaty even more. James listened to his father even dutifully, absorbing his rants and monologues that helped offset the void where Matthew once was. School became a tense place, where children eyed each other based on each other’s species and the threat of violence simmered in the year.
Finally, near the start of 2371, his mother finally had enough and took him back to Federation territory, terrified of losing another son. His father stayed behind to keep the house, determined that their family home stay with a Mason. For James, the shock of going from the tense and gritty colonies to the clean and serene Federation was a slap in the face. He adjusted quickly but there was a seed of resentment at the ease Federation citizens had. James continued to send messages to his father regularly, telling him about class and life within the Federation. His father initially replied regularly, but contact eventually slowed to a trickle when his father said that he was joining a group of likeminded individuals to protect Federation colonists.
James developed a love for tinkering with electronics that complimented his science and math proficiencies that had begun to bloom within his Federation school. Excited at the opportunities open in the better schooling system James began to improve in leaps in bounds, relentlessly pursuing more knowledge. The idea that massive vessels plied the stars due to the dizzying array technology within them was a siren call to the young teenager.
In 2372 James received the final communication from his father, one that shaped James for the rest of his life. In the letter, his father explained that he was joining a local resistance group, one that would prevent the Cardassians from killing others as they had done to his brother. His father explained that the Federation disapproved of the resistance, but was unwilling to help those in the DMZ. He told his son that he was going to have to go silent, but emphasized how proud he was of James for excelling in school and helping with his mother. The final line that defined James Mason was his father telling him that he’d see James at their family home when this was all done.
James became outspoken in school, going out of his way to defend colonists in the DMZ as well as the Maquis whenever they came up. This made him no friends and was the subject of numerous disciplinary measures enacted by the school system. His tangles with the school administration continued through 2372 and into 2373 until his mother received a letter from Federation authorities. Maquis agents had routed a communication through Star Fleet and after they had cleared the message it was passed along to the single mother and her son. It was the final will and testament of Robert Mason, killed during a disastrous ambush by a Cardassian paramilitary group. Aside from a small sum of money the only thing bequeathed to the two was the family home on Volan III. The Jem’Hadar invasion with the Cardassian Union in 2373 of the DMZ made sure that this would never come to James and his mother.
The last will of his father, invasion of the DMZ by the Jem’Hadar, and the Federation’s complete lack of response instilled James with a lasting hatred of the Cardassian Union, Jem’Hadar, and the Federation’s spineless nature. With nothing left the young man threw himself into his studies, and began to focus on multiple disciplines of engineering during school with an emphasis on material engineering, classical mechanical engineering, and continuum distortion propulsion mechanics. Following his graduation from school in 2378 the young man scored an entry-level position with the Antares Ship Yards. He was living the dream, helping create the behemoths that would ply the voids of space.
Over time he grew more interested in his father and the group he’d been a part of. His studies uncovered that Robert Mason had been a part of the Maquis
