SIBLINGS: Reej Rollo, brother, civilian trader
EDUCATION: Traditional schooling on her home planet until she was accepted to Starfleet Academy in her 16th year.

STARFLEET SERVICE: Upon graduation from the Academy, Zef was assigned to the USS Calypso. After one year, Rollo raised in rank to Lt. In a career that was moving in the right direction and receiving positive reviews, her mother’s death was sudden. The Captain awarded Zef a leave of absence which turned out to be longer than she’d planned. Upon returning, three years later, the Bajeen was assigned to the Medical ship USS Rescue, a floating hospital that traveled where it was needed, colonies and battle zones mostly. Zef achieved the rank of LtCmdr for distinguished services over the next three years, however, her practices on Baj (when she took her yearly vacation )became public knowledge due to ill feelings towards her by an unethical Doctor on board, and thus began the subsequent bouncing from ship to ship. Every time she returned after a short absence to Baj in celebration of the Cho Khai, there were new transfer orders waiting for her—the explanation always the same, ‘in the interest of keeping morale intact’ you have been reassigned. Starfleet couldn’t call her out on a practice that was tradition to the Bajeen people for thousands of years. In the last six years, Rollo has served on five different ships, the USS Pegasus being the last in that series.

LENGTH OF SERVICE: Fourteen years, including the three year leave of absence upon her mother’s death. Anara Rollo’s dying wish for her daughter was for Zef to return home to Baj and experience the Cho Khai, a ritual and subsequent acceptance of the old ways.

BACKGROUND/SPECIAL SKILLS: The inhabitants of Baj can be traced back thousands of years to the earliest humanoids that resembled Neanderthals of Earth. Life was exceedingly hard and represented a constant fight for survival. Cannibalism was practiced if no other food source could be found. Only the old and dying were sacrificed, and only if it was their wish to sustain their people. Survival of the fittest tended to wean out the weaker links of the species, but evolution on Baj was very slow until other worlders arrived. The Bajeen did not understand what transpired during that alien visit until several generations later, when they puzzled all of the happenings together. The other worlders exposed one continent of Baj to a bright beam of light that scoured the land and all those upon it, forever changing the history of the small planet. The aliens arrived 700 years ago, their technology forcing the Bajeens that had been affected by the beam, to begin evolving at a tremendous rate. In 700 years, they went from cave dwellers to the technology of the 24th century. Every new generation saw leaps and bounds in knowledge and understanding of how the universe worked, on a daily basis. The fast development of mind and body, technology, and way of life, has caused much unrest between those that were enhanced by the outworlders and those that were not.

Zef and her family are descendants from those caught in the other worlders beam. The one thing that keeps life peaceful between the two different factions of Bajeens, is the ritual of ‘Cho Khai’. It is the one time that the intellectually superior revert back to the old ways, once again joining the un-enhanced, to assure them that they have not lost their sense of history, and that they accept their bond with them. The two groups are now able to speak a rough language with each other that allow these gatherings to take place peacefully. This was the dying wish of Zef’s mother—that her daughter experience the ‘Cho Khai’ and live among the ‘lowers’ while trying to teach them the advances their world has made. Zef Rollo did this and participated in the cannibalistic ritual, then stayed for three years with the lower intelligents. It is for this reason that those who know of her actions, have difficulties being comfortable around her. Once a year, every year, she returns home to take part in the same ritual to honor her mother. It is the only time LtCmdr Rollo succumbs to eating the flesh of others. It is also a practice that non-Bajeen species have reservations about. Each time one of the ‘enhanced’ takes part in the Cho Khai, they are marked with a liquid amalgam. The liquid is actually a mixture containing a silver colored metal that stays in a malleable form. It is a visual way of letting the un-enhanced know that they are being approached by ‘one who understands’. As the intellectually slower Bajeen are taught and brought forward in their knowledge, some rituals from long ago are dying out. Most children born now will not experience the Cho Khai or the silver tattooing.

Unusual/Special Skills: Rollo possesses the ability to see ‘aural ghosts’, or after-images of lifeforms in an aural memory.Every life form releases a constant energy field around itself. This field travels with the being, but trails remain for a certain amount of time everywhere it has been. It is possible for LtCmdr Rollo to identify these images and make a calculated guess as to how old the ‘ghost’ is, therefore allowing her party to know if they are in immediate danger or on the right track during any hunt for Starlfeet’s purposes. She is not telepathic, but can enter a room or a setting anywhere and tell if someone and/or how many, have been there in the last several hours—even if no outward traces of them appear to the other members in her party. The intensity of the aural image defines the length of time since it departed. This is a useful skill when one suspects foul play or when on an away mission where abolutes are unknown. It helps in deciding if the contact is lying about numbers or strengths of their species, or any hidden agendas, such as ambush, that they might have.

Any further explanation of these skills must come from LtCmdr Rollo, herself.
