Character Biography

Born on Betazed, Orin was an odd child. His parents thought he was disabled as he didn’t have any telepathic or empathic ability with others during his childhood but he always seemed to have an affinity with machines and electronics. His parents noted his knack of being able to fix almost anything even in his childhood and put off his explanation that whatever he was working on wasn’t feeling well as childish imaginings.

In his teens his ability to fix almost anything had people telling him that he could have a good job in an engineering field but not if he kept talking about machines as if they were feeling things, that was just a bit too strange for many around him.

In his late teens he left home and went into Star Fleet academy to study engineering. His instructors noted his affinity with diagnosing and repairing problems with equipment and such, even with devices that he had never encountered and didn’t have the terminology for, and began to look more into his background and testing him in other ways.

Star Fleet, through testing and observation, determined that Orin was not a Betazoid without empathic capabilities, but a mutation that had turned that empathic ability to machines. Orin was officially recognized, by Star Fleet, as a machine empath. This was primarily attributed to a large variation in the region of the brain most commonly associated with telepathy/empathy in Betaziods. The area is flooded with particles of copper, gold, graphite, and platinum bonded to the neurology in an organic manner so as to appear to be a natural part of the structures that makes up eighty percent of his neurological structure in the area The region shows high levels of activity due to a neural accelerating effect on the local neurological processes.

Orin is an average looking man with shoulder length wavy metallic copper hair. Like other Betazoids, his eyes are large but his irises look like brushed steel due to metallic particles being biologically generated, with the normal biological cells, giving his hair (copper) and eyes (titanium) their metallic looks but maintaining the normal feel and integrity of the associated organ.
