Physical Description

Albert is tall and somewhat wiry and wears glasses, refusing to risk his sight to corrective eye surgery. This quirk is the cause of much teasing from other doctors. He tries to work out regularly to keep in shape, but his studies always come first. That tends to lead to somewhat sedentary habits. The fact that he is a gourmand who enjoys rich food does not help either.

Personality

Albert is studious, extremely driven, and competitive, though he is scrupulously honest in those competitions. He is introverted and often nervous in social situations, attempting to cover that by talking too much. He is steadfastly loyal and generous with his friends. Part of this generosity comes from discomfort from the fact that he came from a privileged background and he knows that not everyone did. He has a profound sense of duty and a firm commitment to help others. He sees both medicine and space exploration as his vehicles to do that, even though he has spent little time off of Earth. Injustice or perceived injustice infuriates him.

Background

Albert grew up in a wealthy family that was committed to social justice. He was always adept scholastically and constantly sought greater challenges in school from a young age. That ambition turned him into a child prodigy who graduated from college at 15. His school achievements were often overlooked by family and friends because they appeared to be obtained with little effort. His drive and ambition tend to isolate him and he spent a great deal of his childhood alone. He spends most of his free time caring for his elderly mother, with whom he is extremely close. He sees a career in Starfleet as the fulfillment of a personal and family legacy. He is obsessed with his ancestor and namesake Albert Schweitzer (1875-1965) and has read every biography of him published throughout the centuries.
