Character Biography

“Federation scum!”
K’Aleth swung his bat’leth wide and sliced it neatly across the throat of the stricken Starfleet officer. As the dying human’s blood splattered across his cheek, he turned his face to the heavens and let out a roar of triumph.
From off to his left, a second roar joined with his own. “My brave SuvwI’,” General Bartel growled. “You are my greatest assassin.”
K’Aleth fell onto one knee and bowed before his commander. “Thank you, Sir.”

“Nooooo!”
K’Aleth sat up quickly, his bedsheets strewn around him, soaked with sweat. At his side, his wife, Maretta, opened her eyes.
“The dream again?” she asked, rubbing her husband’s back gently.
He nodded, then tore away from her and strode wearily into the bathroom to drown his face in cold water.
“The war was over ten years ago, K’Aleth. You have to forget it,” Maretta called out to him.
K’Aleth stared back at his reflection in the small mirror over the sink. “Forget? How can I forget. I murdered hundreds of Federation officers. To remember, to relive what I did, is my punishment.”
Maretta appeared behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her head into his back. “You were only a child. You are different now. We all have things in our past that we regret, but we forgive ourselves and move on.”
K’Aleth spun round angrily to face his human wife. “How can you bear to look at me? I murdered your kinsmen.”
But Maretta merely shook her head. “Everything is different in war. We were your enemy then. Now, the only enemy you have is yourself.”

“Don’t leave me.”
K’Aleth gripped Maretta’s small hand in his own and stared down at her, tears forming in his eyes. The dying woman reached up gently and caressed her husband’s cheek.
“Shh,” she said, her voice hoarse and broken. “My brave SuvwI’. You must stay strong. For our children.”
“This is my fault,” he spat. “It is my punishment for the wrongs I did.”
Maretta shook her head. “No. It is merely my time. K’Aleth, I have been ill for a while now. I am tired. I need to rest. Eternal rest.”
She closed her eyes. “I will always love you, my husband.”
“And I you,” K’Aleth replied, his voice choked with sorrow.
“Promise me, husband, that you’ll forgive yourself for your past. You’ll move on and be happy. Do this. For me.”
K’Aleth nodded silently and squeezed Maretta’s hand as it went limp in his own.

“But why do you have to leave?”
K’Aleth picked up his son and placed the young half-Klingon on his knee.
“I made a promise, to your mother.”
“To join Starfleet?”
“Yes…in a way,” K’Aleth shrugged.
It had been four years since Maretta had passed, and in that time, K’Aleth had struggled to keep his promise. He’d taken the children on vacation to Terran, to ‘teach them about their heritage’ and try to integrate himself with humans. But the sense of guilt at every human face he saw, each one a brutal reminder of a life he had taken, had almost overwhelmed him.
This was his final chance. If he could become a Starfleet Officer, could serve honourably alongside human comrades, then just maybe, he could be forgiven.
K’Aleth had arranged for his two children, eight year old son K’Alethen, and seven year old daughter Chenka, to be cared for by his brother. And although to be parted from them tore a huge rift through his heart, K’Aleth knew this was the only way he could move on. He had made a promise. He had to fulfill it.
