Character Biography

Some Garrett background…

The shadow walk and multiple image abilities, as well as the other items to be explained below, are things he’s had since I made him for OED-V many years ago.

His shadow walk and multiple image abilities are like Shijima, the ninja in purple, from the animated Ninja Scroll movie. Can’t find a good video clip but you’ll see him in the trailer. Warning: There is brief animated nudity in the trailer.

The stepping ability is a more recent addition to his active abilities but has been part of his background from when he was part of the Quarm. A far reaching assassin’s guild that are part of the Spiral Nomads, which is a nomadic civilization in gigantic arcology ships that travel mainly in the darkness of deep space. If you’re familiar with Heavenly Sword. Garrett’s stepping ability is like what you see from General Flying Fox in the Generals cut scene.

Garett was born a Spiral Nomad. Spiral Nomads live in giant arcology ships that drift through the deep black between the galactic arms. They come into the galaxy proper to resupply and to diversify their genetic pool. In the Nomad society, children stay with their parents until they’re three years of age. At that time they are taken into a room where the tools of the various trades/professions are on display. For three days, the children are watched closely for which one they gravitate to the most and that becomes their life. Garrett became a Quarm. An elite assassin. His genetics were modified and he was trained and conditioned for what he would be in life. The genetic engineering had modified his body with enhanced range of motion, heightened perception and reflexes, increased agility and dexterity, and the ability to move between moments of perception (The Step). Garrett had a different way of thinking than most other Nomads. He was curious about what was beyond his existence as a Quarm. So when the handler of his team died, rather than be killed, he accepted exile.

After exile, Garrett found that there were more possibilities out in the universe than killing. He found his way into the Keeper Brotherhood (Reference the Thief series of games.). A group of watchers that observed and documented everything around them from the shadows. He learned how to go mostly unseen when he didn’t want to be noticed, even in the middle of a crowd, and learned to nearly perfectly blend into shadows and darkness. Garrett swore off his past as an assassin and killer and he lost his ability to use The Step. However, his genetic modifications had other effects he had yet to learn.

Garrett didn’t fit in the Keeper Brotherhood very well either. With his enhanced physical abilities and the stealth skills they had taught him, he became a thief. He was very good at it and had pulled off many high profile jobs, able to acquire items, and sometimes even people, from areas and fortifications normally thought impossible to breach. This service doesn’t come cheap. One night a job he was doing, purely for self gratification, had gone wrong. An unusually perceptive guard had caught Garrett unawares and had called reinforcements. They actually managed to corner Garrett in an alcove behind a statue. Beaten and bloody Garrett was sure he was going to die that night. As the guard brought down the blade meant to split Garrett’s skull, Garrett felt himself fall backwards into blackness. That’s when he discovered his ability to travel the Shadow Gates.

Garret spent the next two decades using the shadow gates to roam the universe learning, stealing for greed and profit, and spying. Early on, Garrett learned that no power was greater, or more valuable, than information. After that, through blackmail and as payment for work done, Garrett set up an extensive information network that reached into every corner of the known galaxy and beyond.

Garrett had set his home up on an as yet uninhabited planetoid. A hangar hidden in an extinct caldera, disguised by a triple redundant tactile holographic array to make it appear as a plateau rather than a crater. Connected underground is an extensive network of carved out caves that contain the many facilities that make up Garrett’s sanctuary. The exterior access looks like nothing more than a small environmentally sealed cabin with airlock access about a kilometer from the plateau. Garrett’s work was known for taking him away from his home for years at a time.

Arriving back home after being gone for three years, Garrett was surprised to find a station in orbit and a dome seven and a half kilometers from his sanctuary with a budding colony inside. The colony known as OED V. Rather than pick up and move, Garrett decided to attempt integration. That’s when he met Governor Sylvester. Their friendship wasn’t immediate though the business side of their relationship grew quickly.

During the years, Governors changed. OED V changed. During one attempted political upheaval, Sy asked Garrett to perform an assassination. Garrett explained to Sy what that would mean, reawakening the Quarm Garrett had buried deep down inside so long ago. Sy was insistent and invoked the contract between them. Garrett did the job and, as he had feared, it awakened the long dormant training of the Quarm. He lost his self imposed compulsion against unnecessary killing and, awakened, The Step returned. Garrett was no longer merely a master thief and information broker, once again, he was Quarm. A genetically modified, conditioned from early childhood, master assassin.

Added in the second year of OED V…

Gomorrah House is a large stone mansion. There are no signs outside differentiating it from any other residence. There is no advertising. Word of mouth is the only thing to guide one to the proper door.

Inside the house is opulent. Grand luxurious furnishings are in all the rooms. Precious works of art and artifacts of great value are on open display. The scents that drift through the house are lush and soothing. The lighting soft. The music haunting.

Within this house Garrett works on his less secretive contracts and takes meetings for business. His support staff consists of twelve Orion Slave Girls. Though Garrett claims not to own them and has stated that they are free to stay or go of their own free will, all twelve have refused to leave and still refer to him as their master.

Of these twelve, one is matron and keeper of the house. She is the first of Garrett’s women. Her name is Lillith.
The remaining eleven are, in alphabetical order: Calliope, Clio, Erato, Euterpe, Inanna, Melpomene, Polyhymnia, Sapho, Terpsichore, Thalia, Urania
These women are highly trained in various fields of surveillance, information gathering, and the like.

Within it’s walls secrets are told and kept, mental and emotional wounds are soothed, aches and pains relieved, and companionship is shared. Of the many services offered in the Gomorrah House, sexual favors are not among them. It is a place of many pleasures, but a brothel it is not. Those who go there for services that would be found in a brothel find themselves forcefully ejected by the well armed and highly skilled women and banned from the premises.
