Raised by an agricultural scientist and a social worker, Janna had a childhood where she was actively encouraged to be curious about the world and people around her. Raised in the port city of Heliopolis, she had an intense fear of water until she became determined to get over after deciding (for a brief time) to be a marine biologist. The career fascination didn’t last, but the love the learning and the unknown did.

Her diminutive stature and easy manner often disguise her very sharp and cunning mind, but people who get to know her better soon come to see her as a deeply complex woman. Janna’s well known hobby is ‘people-watching’ but often for more than simple clinical purposes. She finds people genuinely fascinating and is generally able to read them well. Having worked in varied environments, she has a great deal experience with different species and is rarely fazed by the ‘new’.

Janna was on the USS Hypatia as a cadet on her training cruise. They were on a survey mission out in the Zeta Gelis Cluster and made contact with a people known as the Rankarii of Emiria III.

While on the planet, Janna and a small team were investigating an unusual report from the locals about a semi-sentient vine they called ‘lako’. For several days they found no evidence, but Janna came into contact with the lako vine rather unexpectedly near a cave. It attacked her immune system and liver, resulting in damage to her clotting Factor V gene.

The medical staff on the Hypatia conducted gene therapy to correct the issue and it seemed at first to have worked. But after 18 months, the treatment began to reverse itself. They have repeated the gene treatment but each time it reverses itself within 1-2 years.

Therefore, Janna is technically diagnosed with aprahaemophilia. A prophylactic (regularly scheduled) treatment regimen with the appropriate clotting factors and specific exercises to strengthen joints reduces the complications of bleeds. Janna’s case is considered mild (clotting factors are at 40% of normal) and usually non-life threatening for normal bumps and bruises. While a permanent treatment is always hoped for, so far nothing seems to have worked for currently unknown reasons.

NOTE: Janna wears a small device shaped like a silver bracelet most of the time. It is voice activated with a password Janna has se-up and anytime said password is entered it will the CMO or whomever is on duty that you she in need of immediate medical assistance. So long as she is conscious, this reduces the wait time for medical response should she be seriously injured. She has a Uniform Code exception on file that allows it, since it counts as jewellery. She also has a belt version she can wear as a backup or where the bracelet might not be appropriate.
