Due to Sam’s family history, it was hard for him to make friends growing up always moving around on earth or being aboard a ship. He also is an only child and has no cousins or aunts and uncles.
So Sam found ways to deal with his loneliness by learning and training in martial arts at the age of 4 and weapons learning from his father and other training officers and Marines when he turned 12, Sam became more of an expert in weapons, and his skills in hand to hand combat was outstanding according to the Marine who trained him.
His size and natural athletic abilities made it easy but he was treated like any other person during the training and he could take a beating and dish it out just as good, his expertise in firearms proficiency was perfect.
So when Sam came of age he joined The Starfleet Marine Corps at 17 to break the cycle of family history in Starfleet and served 6 yrs in the Marines and made Sargent, making a name for himself as a marksman during his time before transferring to Starfleet it’s knowing that family history and tradition meant more to him. At 23 he went to seek adventure and action in Starfleet.
