Massat is of average height and build for his species. As is typical with Deltans, he is completely hairless save for his eyebrows and lashes which have a faint reddish color.
No notable injuries.
No known illnesses.
No distinguishing features.
Karilan Massat is of above average intelligence. He is reserved in social settings, and takes an inordinate amount of time in entering into interpersonal relationships. This is due to his concern that any affection shown to him, especially by non-Deltans, is a result of his natural pheromones and not a genuine desire to be his friend. This self-imposed isolation can make him seem aloof and distant, but the few friends he does have tell of a person of great joy and humor. He simply wants to be sure that he is liked for him, not a chemical reaction.
Karilan Massat was born on Delta V, the home world of his species. He was orphaned at the age of six weeks when a water-born vessel he and his parents were travelling on sank. He was one of only three survivors. He was raised by his paternal Aunt, an antiques collector and dealer of no small reputation in Federation space. As such, he was provided with an excellent education and opportunities not available to some. His childhood was spent travelling and collecting items with his Aunt, and being tutored by various instructors of various species. He demonstrated an early aptitude for mathematics and engineering, and he focused on these areas in his studies. By his eighteenth year, he had a solid knowledge of most general engineering concepts, and had even designed a filter to use in the water purifiers on his home planet. He wanted to further his education, but wasn’t overly inspired by the opportunities that were presented to him until a close friend of his Aunt, a Star Fleet Captain, offered to write him a letter of recommendation to the Academy. Massat was overjoyed, and applied immediately. He was accepted and he left for Earth.
His time at the Academy was difficult. Not academically, in that arena he excelled. But socially he struggled. The reputations of Deltans was well known and, even following the strict protocols to keep his pheromones from affecting his classmates, he still found himself a popular study partner. This served to make him somewhat uncomfortable, and he spent the first two years at the Academy mostly isolated. This changed somewhat when he entered the Engineering program. There it was his knowledge that (mostly) encouraged people to seek his company, and he made a few good friends with whom he still maintains a relationship.
After graduating from the Academy, he was assigned to the USS Tappen Zee for his Cadet cruise. This was a difficult assignment for Massat, as the Medical Officer in charge there was too lax in his responses to Karilan’s requests for pheromone inhibitor. This delay on the CMO’s part caused his pheromones to affect the crew in the engineering section, and that resulted in people ignoring their duties in order to be near Karilan. This resulted in a full loss of power while the ship was at warp. The ship immediately dropped out of warp, but thankfully the damage was minimal and no significant injuries were reported. Massat was called in front of the Commanding Officer and was being berated for failing to control his pheromones when a Medical Junior Officer intervened and showed the Captain the multiple requests from Massat for the inhibitor. The Captain removed the CMO from duty and transferred him off the ship. Karilan was also transferred, but not for cause. There were many people in Engineering that were highly embarrassed and uncomfortable because of what happened and, rather than changing out an entire Engineering team, it was determined that Massat would be transferred but given a written recommendation from the Commanding Officer. He was selected for the USS Ark Angel, and left immediately.
