Psychological History:

Karilan Massat is of above average intelligence. They are reserved in social settings, and takes an inordinate amount of time in entering into interpersonal relationships. This is due to their concern that any affection shown to them, especially by non-Deltans, is a result of their natural pheromones and not a genuine desire to be their friend. This self-imposed isolation can make them seem aloof and distant, but the few friends they do have tell of a person of great joy and humor. They are awkward around new people, and this is intensified if they feel drawn, emotionally or physically, to them. They simply want to be sure that they are liked for who they are, not a chemical reaction.

Biography:

Karilan Massat was born on Delta V, the home world of their species. They were orphaned at the age of six weeks when a water-born vessel they and their parents were travelling on sank. They were one of only three survivors. Raised by his paternal Aunt, an antiques collector and dealer of no small reputation in Federation space, Karilan was an outgoung and socially engaged child… not to mention mentally gifted. As such, they were provided with an excellent education and opportunities not available to some. Their childhood was spent travelling and collecting items with their Aunt, and being tutored by various instructors of various species. They demonstrated an early aptitude for mathematics and engineering, and focused on these areas in their studies. By their eighteenth year, they had a solid knowledge of most general engineering concepts, and had even designed a filter to use in the water purifiers on their home planet. They wanted to further their education, but wasn’t overly inspired by the opportunities that were presented to them until a close friend of their Aunt, a Star Fleet Captain, offered to write them a letter of recommendation to the Academy. Massat was overjoyed, and applied immediately. They were accepted and left for Earth.

Their time at the Academy was difficult. Not academically, in that arena they excelled. But socially they struggled. The reputations of Deltans was well known and, even following the strict protocols to keep their pheromones from affecting their classmates, they still found themselves a popular study partner. This served to make them somewhat uncomfortable, and they spent the first two years at the Academy mostly isolated. This changed somewhat when they entered the Engineering program. There it was their knowledge that (mostly) encouraged people to seek their company, and they made a few good friends with whom they still maintain a relationship.

After graduating from the Academy, they were assigned to the USS Tappen Zee for their Cadet cruise. This was a difficult assignment for Massat, as the Medical Officer in charge there was too lax in his responses to Karilan’s requests for pheromone inhibitor. This delay on the CMO’s part caused their pheromones to affect the crew in the engineering section, and that resulted in people ignoring their duties in order to be near Karilan. This resulted in a full loss of power while the ship was at warp. The ship immediately dropped out of warp, but thankfully the damage was minimal and no significant injuries were reported. Massat was called in front of the Commanding Officer and was being berated for failing to control their pheromones when a Medical Junior Officer intervened and showed the Captain the multiple requests from Massat for the inhibitor. The Captain removed the CMO from duty and transferred them off the ship. Karilan was also transferred, but not for cause. There were many people in Engineering that were highly embarrassed and uncomfortable because of what happened and, rather than changing out an entire Engineering team, it was determined that Massat would be transferred but given a written recommendation from the Commanding Officer. They were selected for the USS Ark Angel, and left immediately.

They served with distinction on the Ark Angel, and that propelled Massat on a singularly notable career trajectory. Their level of expertise grew, and they became a knowledgeable and highly sought after Engineering officer. Eventually assigned to the Academy to teach, and it was here that they came to the full attention of the Daystrom Institute and were recruited to be part of their build team, eventually becoming the head of their Research and Development Engineering and Fabrication Division; and notably one of the preeminent Engineers in the entire Federation. It was then that they suffered a final familial loss. Their Aunt passed, leaving her vast antique collection to them. Taking a sabbatical from work, they went to Oed V in order to be away from everything and try and find inner peace once again. To this end, they opened ‘Quill and Parchment Books’, a specialty shop for rare and hard-to-find books and such. The shop also has one of the finest coffee shops in all of Oed V, serving a range of drinks and baked goods all made on site.
