Character Biography

—Appearance—

Caelian is of modest height and build, wiry and athletic. There is a simplicity to his features, a unassuming set to his jaw and a humble expression in his pale eyes. In recent years, Caelian has adopted a close-cut style to his dark hair and beard in keeping with Starfleet applicant standards. In the right light, Caelian’s eyes are known to have a violet cast thanks to a childhood illness. His tan skin also bears a slight olive undertone, a testament to his family’s Mediterranean heritage.

—Personal History—

Caelian was born on Stardate 47645.6* to Mikal and Patricia Weir while on an extended science mission aboard the USS Venture. Despite having no children of his age on the Oberth-class vessel, young Caelian flourished amongst the xenoarchaeologists and scientists eager to explain theories and answer questions. The young boy’s astute mind took to tales of ancient civilizations like a sponge to water, absorbing discovery after discovery.

Following the untimely death of his sister in a shuttle accident, Caelian’s interests shifted to his father’s craft of engineering. He worked long and dutifully to understand the cause of so much loss, and to assure it never happened again. Mikal taught the boy all he could, and their work bonded them in their shared grief. To the engineer’s delight and surprise, it was through this that Caelian’s pitch-perfect hearing and uncanny understanding of mathematics was unearthed. The boy was even permitted to assist with simple repairs aboard the Venture and was dubbed “Little Tinker” by captain and crew.

At age 11, a strange malady interrupted Caelian’s studies—a unique, disorienting near-blindness that left him barely able to fend for himself in his parents’ absence. Despite experiencing nauseating pain and spells of vertigo, Caelian was unable to receive proper medical treatment until the Venture completed its surveys and returned to the nearest starbase. It was later discovered to be caused by a confluence of genetic mutation and environmental factors, a sort of “biological fluke.” Fortunately, Caelian was able to recover his eyesight with the help of gene therapy and implants.

After a long and reliable career, Mikal retired from Starfleet when Caelian was 16. While he had received several promising offers from varied civilian vessels, it was his father’s retirement ceremony that inspired him to study for Starfleet. Rather than applying immediately, Caelian decided to help his father support Patricia’s research to its conclusion. The family spearheaded several digs and studies along with the Venture’s crew, as well as a small tour aboard the USS Horizon.

While considered getting a late start in his Starfleet career, Caelian was nonetheless determined to follow in his father’s footsteps and earn the respect of his peers…

—Medical Record—

As mentioned previously, Caelian suffered a singular genetic malady that damaged his optic nerves, as well as both parietal and occipital lobes. Simply known as Antagri’s disease (named for the system in which the disease was thought to have been contracted) amongst the medical staff, the disease most deeply disrupted the boy’s vision and spacial relations. It wasn’t until Caelian was thoroughly examined that a genetic anomaly was the culprit—a curious confluence of natural genetic mutation coupled with atmospheric phenomena native to the Antagri system. Through gene-correction therapy and implantation, doctors were able to correct the issues and return Caelian to normalcy.

The delay in treatment, however, left Caelian with a sensitivity to bright light and a phobia of unobstructed heights. The genetic trade-off is that Caelian has superior night vision and keen spatial perception. Tests have also shown his muscle and bone density to be slightly greater than his peers, though to no remarkable degree. Whether due to Antagri’s disease or simple genetics, Caelian has proven to possess pitch-perfect hearing and an intuitive mind.

Nearly every bone in Caelian’s body shows signs of breakage and stress repair, attributed to a rambunctious youth when planetside and injury from assisting his father in civilian repairs.

—Known Languages—

Caelian is native-fluent in Federation Standard, and well-versed in several of its more regional dialects. He has an elementary understanding of Vulcan, Klingonaase, and Bajoran. He also adequately reads, but does not speak, Old High Martian. With his altered hearing, Caelian can sometimes intuit tone and mood from a foreign language assuming even trace familiarity or posture.

—Personal Timeline—

CHAS01: “Farewells and Hellos” — After managing the rigors of Starfleet’s Academy courses planetside, young Caelian is off to join the crew on the USS Challenger for his final year of training. With a heavy history to follow and sizable shoes to fill, the cadet finds himself eager to prove himself to the Federation… and make a mark all his own.
CHAS02: “Checkup” — Amidst the flurry of his new duties his first day, Caelian finds himself facing his first dilemma aboard the Challenger: getting to know the crew.
CHAS03: “Getting to Know You” — As his first day aboard the Challenger winds to a close, Caelian finds himself face-to-face with the ship’s curious counselor, Hilo.
CHAM01: “Hot Tub Murder Mystery” — When the executive officer of the Challenger is suspected of murder and the ship’s sensors begin making up life signs, it’s up to Caelian and the other cadets to get to the bottom of the mystery. While his peers search the executive officer’s unusual hot tub for clues, Caelian follows a trail in sickbay that leads him to a curious discovery.

ARKS01: “Where Angels Soar” — A graduate of the Federation’s Starfleet Academy and a full-fledged ensign now, Caelian takes on his first deep space assignment aboard the USS Ark Angel. As he settles into his new role and new quarters he learns that he’s not the only person to come from a respectable family of explorers.
ARKS02: “Curious Collisions” —With some time to spare before his next appointment, Caelian decides to add a bit of comfort to his quarters. Later he has a curious encounter with another engineer.
ARKM01: “Out of Time” — [Pending]
ARKS03: “Building Character” — It’s not always easy being an ensign in Starfleet as Caelian has been quick to learn—not even on the holodeck! When the engineer puts his education and skills to work improving his physical training, he learns that some frontiers aren’t easily breached. With the help of his fellow crew members, Caelian learns a bit more about himself.
ARKS04: “Meeting and Greeting” — Deck 17 Forward is the place to be when you’re off-duty, even for the socially-awkward ensign. While enjoying a touch of home Caelian gets to know fellow engineer Mazhari Allendor, the curiously-human Andorian from his first day aboard the Ark Angel.
ARKM02: “Far From Home” — When the enigmatic Q takes a particular interest in the Ark Angel and sends it hurtling millions of light years from Federation space, it’s up to the crew to figure out where they’ve ended up… and how to get home. Thankfully a chance encounter with a fragment of naturally-occurring boridium offers a solution for sustainable energy while they get their bearings. After theorizing with his peers, Caelian helps to fabricate and impliment a few modifications to the USS Ark Angel‘s power systems. While doing so the crew learn of a strange pocket of matter-energy bubbles native to the distant section of space and move to investigate. During some engine tests aboard a runabout Caelian and the crew discover that nearby anomalous energy readings hold signs of protoform life that sparks a moral dilemma in the engineer. Faced with a first contact situation with beings not entirely self-aware as they understood it, the runabout team returns to the Ark Angel to discuss their next move. After a very impassioned discussion with the engineering team, a decision is made to install a slipstream drive into the Ark Angel in hopes of getting the crew home faster. During his off hours, Caelian and a select team begin to study protoform energy with the help of their diminutive passenger.
