History:
Riari The Host
Riari was born to an affluent Trill family on their native homeworld, where no expenses were spared to properly prepare and train their daughter for the possibility of becoming a host. From an early age, rigorous mental and physical training was carried out through personal study, private tutors and prestigious academies. Despite early attempts to diversify her education, Riari was unable to overcome her complete obsession with the study of alien races. As such all of her academic degrees fall under this category, a point that was counted against her when it came to her symbiont candidate application.

Despite this, she still made it to the final round of the Symbiont program before being denied Host status due to an undefined incompatibility. Disappointed Riari instead accepted an enlistment with Star Fleet for the officers track in the science division. It was on her first assignment aboard the USS Sarengi that she was placed under one Lt. Commander Vaais, a joined Trill.

Cadet Riari had developed a close relationship with the senior officer Rurzun Vaais and often worked closely with him on research projects. She being medical and he a Xenobiologist, Riari filled in a knowledge void the Doctor needed when dealing with his more Alien officers and visiting diplomats.

When a Breen spy using cloaking technologies found their way onto the ship and detonated a thermokinetic bomb in the warp cores, a battle ensued with the fleet ship unable to escape. Barely managing to scrape its way through the dog fight, the USS Sarengi was put largely out of commission and forced to limp to the nearest friendly planet for repairs. There was a massive loss of life on board the ship including the decks located near the cores, and a large number of decommissioned officers due to egregious injuries from the decks just beyond. Among those inflicted mortal wounds was Lt. Commander Vaais, who ordered his Symbiont be transferred immediately to Riari in order to preserve it’s life, knowing his own was to be forfeited and the Trill homeworld too far away.

Riari who had been luckily unscathed due to having been on the command deck at the time of the explosion graciously accepted the honor of becoming Vaais’ new host. By the time the USS Sarengi arrived in any port with the transports necessary to return Riari to Trillius Prime, the 96 hours had already come and gone, and the joining complete.

Vaais has now returned to Star Fleet following the required rituals and ceremonies for a newly Joined Trill, in part to escape the scrutiny and controversy that surrounds a Trill joined by circumstance and not selection. Now reassigned to a new ship to avoid reassociation with the previous hosts friends and family, The new being Riari Vaaise is settling into her new existence and job aboard the Dresden as the ship’s new doctor.

Vaais The Symbiont
Host One
The first time Vaais was joined was with a diplomat named Barzi. Joined at the age of 22, this first host as a prime example of what the Symbiosis Commission looks for in a candidate. Both possessing of strong mind and body, Barzi also had a strong enough personality that they believed he could blend without losing his Trill nature to the Symbiont. It is a rare union for a fresh Symbiont and a youth to be joined, but the Commission believed in Barzi’s ability to guide the newborn Symbiont and grow together with him.

The joining was a success, and Barzi Vaais was formed. The diplomat spent a handful of his formative years studying in a secondary optional program set up for new Symbiont pairs, focusing on interspecies decorum and customs. After this schooling was complete, the diplomat served the next twenty five years serving the Trill government as a liaison with StarFleet.

The next eight Barzi enjoyed service as a Senior Councillor aboard a Star Fleet controlled space station, followed by another six aboard an Excelsior Class federation ship. He married a Vulcan woman named T’ren to which he subsequently had two children named K’riss and Malir.

After retirement Barzi took up several hobbies, including music in the forms of Bajoran Tivara, Trill Piano and the human Mandolin. He attempted to learn to draw but was dreadful at it, his drawings often mistaken for that of his children. He also had a short stint attempting to act in his space stations local theatre troupe but never had more than a ten-line part. Though most artistic pursuits were a loss on him save the instruments, Barzi did possess a fine tongue for languages and learned ten in addition to Standard and Trill. He believed strongly that the quickest way to the heart of a hard diplomat was to be able to turn off the translators and speak in a common tongue.

Barzi died at the age of 98 years old peacefully and among a family who adored him on Trillius Prime, his body immediately transferred to the Commission’s hospital where the Symbiont Vaais was removed and implanted into its next host, Rurzan

Host Two
Rurzan always had aspirations to work with StarFleet ever since he was a young man. Applying to be a host was honestly just a formality to make his parents happy. He knew that if he could enter Starfleet with a Symbiont he would be put on the fast track for leadership, but he would go regardless even if he had to work his way up from the engine room.

He had always had his eyes on the stars ever since a very small child, and it was the curiosity and drive paired with his degrees earned in medical sciences and command that landed him the opportunity to become a host. He initially was scheduled to take on a different Symbiont of an older woman who was ready to give herself over to death and allow her Symbiont to move onto a new host, when Barzi Vaais passed suddenly the day before Rurzan was to go in for the joining.

This younger Symbiont Vaais was offered to Rurzan instead and something about it just felt right, so Rurzan agreed to the joining and was rushed into the capital for the joining a day early. The joining was a success despite coming down to the last possible minute for implantation, and Rurzan Vaais was formed.

While this blend did to a degree dampen the hungry aspirations of Rurzan alone, it opened the young man up to a strange new confidence and peace. Immediately applying to StarFleet, took the necessary courses to make sure his medical knowledge was up to par and was placed on his first and only ship assignment the USS Sarengi.

Once aboard he quickly moved up through the ranks through a mixture of merit and good fortune as those older than him went into retirement, with a ship’s captain that always believed in promoting within instead of bringing new folks aboard for command roles. Two subsequent tours later for a combined fourteen years aboard the USS Sarengi, Rurzan met the first woman to deeply interest him. Cadet Riari, a Xenobiologist of his Trill heritage.

Through a relationship that grew through personal and professional respect, Rurzan grew to trust his cadet, bringing her along on many away missions for data collection and admittedly towards the end, making up assignments so they could continue to work closely. Though the relationship never had the opportunity to grow intimate, the pair were affectionate, and should Rurzan have lived longer he might have done something more serious about it. However, a year and a half after Riari’s arrival, tragedy struck the Sarengi.

When the bomb went off in the warp cores, a chain reaction tore through the lower decks that surrounded the tech. Many were lost, either consumed in fire, torn apart by shrapnel, or worse, sucked out into the cold vacuum of space. While the medbay was not one completely destroyed, Rurzan had gotten caught in a connecting hallway, taking a mortal wound when a support beam erupted from the ground, shot through the ship like a spear by the Thermokinetic gforces, and crushed the upper rib cage, shoulders and legs of the Joined Trill man.

An engineering chief who had been walking with him, an Orion named Mossev, was remarkably unhurt, carried the broken man by his request to the medical bay. He screamed for someone to find Riari to tell him she was safe to bring her to him. When Riari arrived the sight would have been grizzly, Rurzan ordering injections that would sustain his life long enough for a vital operation. For once Rurzan knew transport to Trillus Prime was impossible in time to save the Symbiont, there was only one option left to them.

Luckily for the Symbiont Vaais, Riari agreed to the joining, desiring to save any small part of the man she had grown to care for, even if it meant hosting it within herself. Rurzan forced his way through the pain to stay away, guiding the Medical officer in attendance to complete the joining operation, Riari holding his unshattered hand the entire time. Rurzan passed quickly after the operation was complete, his body so broken it was clear he had only been holding on for this last task.

Host Three
Riari Vaais woke after the operation and knew in her heart all the things that Rurzan Vaais never told her. She was overwhelmed by a love that changed almost while she was first examining it to a kind of self-love she had never known before. A warmth in her chest as two become one that has stayed with her since the joining solidified.

Though it was not how Riari expected to arrive at this moment, to bear the honor of playing host to a Symbiont, in a bittersweet way she knew she appreciated it more. Fueled by the aspirations and desires and memories of two hosts before her and Vaais inside of her, Riari did not linger overlong on her homeworld for the rituals performed by a begrudging Symbiosis Commission.

Riari returned to starfleet to await her new assignment, determined to make herself and the Commission proud with her achievements and prove that she deserved Hosthood all along.
