Place of Birth: Kijia of Kosiite, in the Debrenn Division, Zahara Prime
La’kia has warm taupe coloured skin, long olive coloured hair and deep set, narrow gold eyes. She has tall, slender pointed ears measuring 15 cms. The pads of her fingers and toes are slightly rough, allowing her to climb rough organic surfaces easily. Her species evolved from a type of feline and as such, she is very lithe and quick, with a thin, flexible body. However, due to a slightly lower gravity than Earth and subsequently, her light bones, her body is more fragile.
2361- Born to Sata in the village of Kosiite.
2376- Moved to the small growing city of Labriiss to study science.
2379- Attends the Notrida Institute of Science and Technology.
2383- Obtains degrees in Botanical Sciences and Biology.
2385- Completes an advanced degree in Botanical and Ecological Sciences.
2386- Applied for and was accepted to the Federation-Zaharan Cultural exchange program. La’kia is the first person to trial the program and live off-world.
------- Attended courses at Star-fleet Academy to acclimate.
2387- Assigned to the USS Genesis for a one year assignment.
2388- Awarded a commendation for outstanding service to the science department from Fleet Captain Patricia Lewis for her efforts to help return them home, in a mission that landed the Genesis in a different place and time.
------- Becomes engaged to the ship’s XO, Commander Julien King.
2389- Appointed by the Chief Elder of Zahara as an Ambassador for her people and decides to continue working on the Genesis.

The Zaharans are a forest dwelling species who traditionally lived in the canopies of the great forests that cover their world. They are a matriarchal people and a peaceful society. In what is known as the Great Wave of Knowledge, the Zaharans gained technological knowledge above their very simplistic ways. Though it isn’t clear how they got this knowledge, ancient texts describe meetings with the ‘Star Spirits’, their spiritual guides. In more recent times, a good many Zaharans believe that these Star Spirits were actually another species who made contact with the Zaharans and imparted their advanced knowledge to the intelligent and curious people.
With this newfound knowledge, the Zaharans built up a more advanced civilization but still clung to their forest roots, finding a balance with some choosing to live traditionally and others in the small cities. Given their connection with the world around them, they tend to favour the sciences and medicine and have become well know in their sector for their holistic healing methods and advanced scientific knowledge.
Twenty years ago, the Federation made first contact with this warp-capable species, though the Zaharans had not explored too much past their local area, given that they only adapted the ancient knowledge about warp they were given about fifty years ago. When the Dominion War hit, there was little contact with the Zaharans, but the Federation was concerned about them being conquered. After the war was over, it was decided to try to formalize their relations. A small trade agreement was established and a few years ago an exchange program was set up on a trial basis. La’kia was one of almost a hundred applicants for this program, and in the end was chosen to participate. She spent one year at Starfleet Academy, taking classes and learning to adjust to such a very different lifestyle.
The Zaharans live communally and share everything willing. Family is very important, and this includes everyone in one’s village, or kijia. Names are given based on the circumstances of the child’s birth, including time, day, season and any other details that are important. A person’s second name is their mother’s and the third is the village they hail from. La’kia was born in the summer on a rainy day. Her mother, Sata, had a difficult birth, and some family members believe this is why La’kia can get herself into trouble so often.
La’kia was raised in the canopies but as a teenager moved into a nearby city to pursue her desire to be a scientist. She is well versed in geology, biology, and botany, and knowledgeable in several other fields. What she doesn’t know, she is a quick study for.
La’kia is very healthy for a member of her species. As is typical of a Zaharan, she possesses heightened senses. Her vision is strong, especially at night, her sense of smell and hearing are very sensitive as are her taste buds. She avoids overly strong tasting foods, as it can be overwhelming, but she will try anything at least once. For the most part, her organs are the reverse of a Human’s. Her species evolved from a type of feline and as such, she is very lithe and quick, with a thin, flexible body. However, due to a slightly lower gravity than Earth and subsequently, her light bones, her body is more fragile. Her immune system has a symbiotic relationship with the organisms of her homeworld, and it is unclear whether long periods away from home will have an impact on her. To date, La’kia seems more prone to catching the illnesses of other species, having had no contact with others outside her kijia and the one city (Labriiss) she lived in. However, she seems to bounce back quickly.
As was discovered in 2388, Zaharans can enter a state of torpor when exposed to extreme stress. It is not a life threatening state, and though one can be roused early, they come out of it on their own within a few hours.
Her personality is one of high curiosity, which can sometimes get her into trouble. She is highly intelligent and learns things quickly, including languages. She can be a little shy, but mostly, it’s because of her new surroundings. Once she gets to know people, she is rather bubbly and extroverted. Having spent three years off her world and seen and experienced a great deal, La’kia is a more grounded individual and more confident. She is open to new ideas and adapts to the various ways people do things, but also knows when to hold tight on to her people’s beliefs and values.
