Jessip R. Quirst is the son of Miranda Quinby and Peyton R. Quirst.
Peyton and Miranda met on the transport shuttle that was taking the two of them to Starfleet Academy from their colony world of Gordian VI. They became friends, then rivals, then started to date all within their first year. At graduation, Miranda was assigned to the USS Brandywine in the Fifth Fleet, and Peyton to the USS Concord in the Third. What they didn’t know was that Miranda was pregnant at the time.
Once her pregnancy was confirmed the pair were ecstatic. Plans were made to meet and spend holidays and shore leaves together, but due to their conflicting schedules it proved to be too much and the couple went their separate ways. Miranda left Starfleet when her first enlistment was up, and returned to Gordian VI with her son. Peyton would spent several more years aboard the Concord rising through the ranks, until the ship’s final mission. She was so badly damaged in combat that Starfleet Command decommissioned the ship, replacing her with the USS Atlantis.
Jessip grew up knowing of his father, since Miranda and Peyton were still very close, but he was more of a distant relative that a constant force in his life. He grew to love the sciences both natural and physical and won his high schools science competition his sophomore year.
During that time his father’s career had progressed. After the loss of the Concord, Peyton was selected to be the next executive officer of his wife’s former ship, the Brandywine. After a year there a command slot opened up aboard a Darwin Class explorer. With his science background and with the full support if his commanding officer, Peyton Quirst was offered the captaincy of the USS Curie.
He would command the ship through the next five years. He was lucky to be able to serve with a core group of command officers that remained relatively constant through his tenure: LtJG Dr. Chris Thomas, CMO; LtJG Ashley D’Ville, CSO; LtJG Wally Porter, COS; and LtJG Jared Kurz, CE. He also had a cadre of exceptional junior officers including Ens. Mesa Litt, engineer; Ens. Jim Elbaz, security, and Ens. Tulavek, Science. Jessip would hear stories of these officers so much that he felt her knew them all personally.
During a mission to the Kirn system, a spatial anomaly was discovered involving the Kirn star. A rift had been discovered that acted like a wormhole. Peyton requested that the Curie be the ship to investigate this anomaly, and while at Starbase 842, the ship was reconfigured. The base general exploration module was replaced with the scientific research module making the Curie a medium Explorer. Cargo bay 4 was retained as storage, and the Captain Yacht was modified to act as a mobile science lab by removing weapons and adding sensors and lab gear.
Upon exploration of the anomaly it was discovered to be a unique conduit to another star. The Curie entered the anomaly and quickly found itself next to a deserted star. The rift then closer and the Curie found themselves in a unexplored area of the Beta Quadrant. The ship was listed officially as MIA. Miranda and Jessip had been told that the ship was missing, presumed destroyed. They mourned Peyton and eventually went on with their lives. It was at this time that Jessip graduated from secondary school and began his studies to apply to Starfleet Academy.
What the rest of the Federation didn’t know was that the Curie was not destroyed, but that it was trapped in that unexplored area of space. The ship and crew would experience many challenges during that time, but eventually they would find away to reopen the rift from their end. When they emerged, Peyton resigned his commission and took up a position as Federation Ambassador to one of the races the ship had discovered in the Beta Quadrant.Peyton reunited with his family and spent the last few years with Jessip and Miranda doing the best he could to repair the years he had missed. He prepped Jessip the best he could and even pulled a few strings here and there to assist along the way.
Peyton’s recovery would take several years. Jessip would serve on several ships and have his own crew stories to tell when he and his father visited. They were both saddened to hear that the Curie was to be decommissioned. This event would be the breaking point for Peyton, whose sadness would seem to be too much for him. He would pass away not to long after.
It was been over a decade ago, but StarFleet Command contacted Jessip with an extraordinary proposal. They were to recommission the Curie and wanted Jessip to lead the project. How could he say NO?
