Physical Description:
Veronica Raven McCallister (goes by Raven with friends and family) is a beautiful human woman of Celtic ancestry. Long red hair accentuates her true facial symmetry, save for the freckles that adorn her nose and cheeks. She carries an athlete’s build that barely hints at her true physical strength. Both eyes are cybernetic and modified with tactical interface capabilities.
Medical History:
Subject had no major injuries or illness prior to the destruction of the John T. Marion. Surgery performed to implant next-generation cybernetic ocular devices under orders from (REDACTED). Implantation successful and neuro-reception of visual stimuli within specifications.
Psychological / Personality History:
Lieutenant McCallister comes off as flighty and bubbly, always happy and seemingly vapid at times. This is a reflexive compensatory act on her part to be more ‘accepted’ by her peers. McCallister is extremely intelligent and shrewd; but those traits were seen as ‘unacceptable’ in social situations for someone with her appearance in her social settings growing up. Hiding her exceptionality was necessary for social acceptance; and has become a kind of habit as she became an adult. She is aware of this, however; and is taking steps to be her true self.
Biography:
Born to self-described ‘folkster’ parents, Veronica Raven McCallister is the youngest of four children and the only girl. As such, she was seen as ‘the baby’ and was doted on in a myriad of ways; but was never spoiled. Her parents were both folk musicians and enjoyed a decent level of celebrity on Earth. Her brothers were named after famous musicians, but that trend ended with her youngest brother. She enjoyed her childhood and spent it surrounded by friends and family. She was active and popular, and had an active social and academic life. Despite her intellect and physical abilities; Raven was softly encouraged by her parents to be ‘more approachable’ to her peers. This led to Raven becoming self-conscious about appearing smart or strong, so she slowly became what she thought was more ‘acceptable’: a bubbly and giggly girl with no real opinion on anything. Fortunately, she still worked hard at her education and graduated as the valedictorian of her class. She also did not allow that effect her athletic endeavors where she was active in cross-country track, softball, swimming, and archery.
Her senior year of high school was an intense time for Raven. She had multiple scholarship offers- both academic and athletic- from very prestigious schools around the world. Her brothers had already gone on to university and it was expected that she would do the same. It came as a complete shock when she announced she was going to Star Fleet Academy. After the shock wore off, her family was ecstatic and even traveled with her to her induction into the Academy.
Her time at the Academy was a whirlwind of studying, training, and more than a few romantic relationships. Her demeanor of a flighty, vapid, pretty face was a complete contradiction to her reputation as a brilliant student and formidable opponent in the pugil stick arena. She excelled in the general courses of the first two years; and it was considered a boon to the division when she elected to go to the Security division. It didn’t take long for her to be tapped to become one of the select few Tactical Specialist Cadets. It was here that Raven truly came into her own.
Raven had a seemingly intuitive understanding of not only the weapons systems themselves; but also the science behind the weapons and defensive systems of starships. This gave her an advantage in combat scenarios and war games, which in turn elevated her to not only the top of her class, but saw her graduate with an undefeated record; a rare feat that cemented her reputation as a truly special Cadet. She also made a name for herself in her personal combat training; and amassed a solid record in both marksmanship and hand-to-hand combat training.
McCallister’s career trajectory was lined up. A solid Cadet cruise was followed by a much-desired posting to the System Defense vessel Mariska. Her tenure there saw her engage pirates, Syndicate smugglers, slavers, and even some Romulans. Her tenacity and tactical creativity was impressive and effective in many ways. Her success garnered her appointment as the Tactical Team Leader of Starbase 10.
Another post, and another successful tenure, later; McCallister drew the attention of Fleet Captain Conner Germaine, the Commanding Officer of the USS Marsha P. Jackson; a Star Fleet Intelligence vessel tasked with the insertion and retrieval of Fleet Intelligence assets in ‘contested’ areas on the border of Federation space.
Her first year aboard was intense, but very successful. But that success, and indeed her very future, were tested almost to the breaking point. A ‘straightforward’ retrieval mission became a near-tragedy when the Jackson was intercepted by a trio of Cardassian assault vessels. The ensuing ship-to-ship combat pushed McCallister’s skills to limit and culminated in the destruction of all of the Cardassian ships… but a final torpedo hit struck the Jackson directly in the forward section. The explosion sent power surges through the ship, and multiple stations on the bridge exploded… including the Tactical station at which McCallister was positioned. The flash of flame and electricity struck her in the face and she was knocked unconscious.
She awoke two weeks later in the Sickbay of Starbase 26. She was blind, the explosion having destroyed her ocula on both sides. Her actions had garnered her the Grankite Order of Tactics and the Star Fleet Award for Conspicuous Gallantry, but her future as a Tactical officer was in jeopardy. Even with implants, her vision could have been too compromised for duty. Given her tactical capabilities, however, it was deemed prudent by Star Fleet to not only give her cybernetic implants to restore her vision; but such devices that would increase her overall effectiveness.
Three surgeries over two months and McCallister could see again. Another three months of intensive vision therapy taught her the capabilities and operation of her new ‘eyes’. Magnification of up to 100x, binocular vision up to 150x, multiple target tracking, multiple energy spectrum-including thermal and ultraviolet- filters, light amplification with automatic flash suppression, EMP shielding, and the ability to directly interface with tactical systems were all now within her visual range and capability. The cutting-edge technology in her eyes made her an ideal candidate for <REDACTED> on the USS John T. Marion.
