Richard Morgan O’Shea was the youngest child and only son among 4 girls born to Commander Gavin and Moira O’Shea. Cmdr. O’Shea was one of the best fighter pilots to have ever served Starfleet. After flying for more than 30 years, Cmdr. O’Shea retired from active duty and become an instructor at the pilot training academy for Stafleet. At the out break of the Dominion War, he returned to active duty and was assigned to a starbase orbiting Betazed. When the Dominion attacked Betazed, O’Shea was KIA defending the planet. This was just before Richard entered pilot training. He was determined and dedicated to live up to the reputation and legacy his father had built.

Richard knew as a child, he was going to be a fighter pilot. When he was five years old, his father had taken him for a ride in a training fighter. From that moment on, Richard knew where his destiny lay. As the only son of Gavin, Richard and his father were very close, as none of his four daughters showed any interest in flying or in joining Starfleet.

Richard (or Ric, as his friends called him), took the loss of his father very hard. Not only had he lost his father, but his mentor, and best friend. Ric mourned the loss of his father, but never shed a tear. He would leave the crying to his mother and older sisters.

He was a very serious student while in pilot school, determined not to let his father down. This ended up being self-defeating, as he put too much pressure on himself to succeed, which in turn, led to numerous failures. He felt that he had let numerous people down: his instructors, family, and most of all his father.

He was at a crossroads over whether or not to quit pilot training or try harder, when one of his friends reminded Ric why he wanted to be a pilot in the first place–because he loved to fly!! It was at that point that Ric realized, he was trying too hard. He got back to flying for the love of it and things began to flow naturally for him. Things became easier, as well as the successes.

Ric began to take things not so seriously and live one day to the next, flying by the seat of his pants, as it were.

Military Career
2376-80: Starfleet Academy, Pilot Training School
2380-82: Promoted to Ensign and assigned as fighter pilot to the USS Veracruz.
2382-85: Promoted to Lt. (jg) and transferred to the USS Brian Olinski, assigned as Green Squadron Leader.
2385-89: Promoted to Lt. and returned to earth as a flight instructor at Starfleet Academy Pilot Training School.
2389-92: Transferred to USS Mjolnir and assigned as Red Squadron Leader
2392-present: Promoted to Lt. Cmdr., assigned to the USS Brian Olinski and given the position of CAG.
