Personality
Personality Type: INTJ-A
It’s easy to form an opinion about Kovan when you first meet him. More often than not that opinion is: “Wow, what a jerk”. Kovan has good qualities. They’re simply overshadowed by his numerous bad qualities. He’s blunt, dismissive, too quick to give his (negative) opinion, and holds a stubborn unwillingness to see the good in people. The only person Kovan trusts is himself, and he hates himself. They say you are your own worst enemy, and Kovan couldn’t agree more.
Without overview or outside accountability, Kovan lost control of his life. He made one impulsive decision after another. Leaping without looking; moving, always moving. Headed somewhere, doing something. He can’t stand the thought of settling down. Or staying in place or stopping. If he stopped then that would be the end of him. Before Starfleet, he only knew stability as a slave. Kovan strives to forget those years. Wants to forget his family and Diadem VI.
Starfleet has no shortage of rules and regulations. It has codes of conduct and clear lines of command. Kovan flourishes under consistency and structure. He does as told, is respectful of command, and performs his job with professionalism.

History
Diadem VI, a backwater colony on the edge of Federation space and a stone throw from Klingons. The people who call Diadem VI home will never shut up about the Klingons, and the colony’s defenses but neither would they move. Stubborn people live on Diadem VI, and Kovan was one of many stubborn people born there. Kovan was his parents’ second (unplanned) child. From the moment he was born, before he could understand words, his parents compared him to his brother. Bel was a quiet, and well-behaved child. Kovan was loud, wild, and out of control. He did not get better.
Life on Diadem VI was boring. Incredibly boring for a young Kovan who needed to get away from his family and his perfect brother. This is how he encountered the other discontent and sometimes neglected children of Diadem VI. They were called many things, none pleasant, but none of those things were as important as what those kids called each other: family. Kovan learned as a young teen that family didn’t have to be the people you were related to. He would later learn that even the family you pick can betray you.
Kovan was too smart for the schools on Diadem VI. He had a knack for languages and was briefly employed at the colony’s spaceport. Engaging with visiting merchants and ensuring a smooth trade of goods and money. The family he was born with told him he could do better than a desk job. The family he picked told him to run off with them. They found a trader in need of extra hands and pay for anyone willing to put in the work. Kovan picked the latter because he was impulsive. He left the only home he knew, took all the money he had, and followed his family into space.
The trader, it turned out, wasn’t a very good one. He was deep in debt actually and sold Kovan and his friends to strange aliens to pay off his debt. Abandoned on an alien world, an unimaginable distance from Diadem VI, and sold into slavery. Almost two years later Kovan and thirteen others were freed by the Federation. His found family was not among those thirteen.
Thus, he found himself on Diadem VI once again. Kovan took one look around, then joined whatever ship would have him. He was smart, good with computers, and had a knack for languages.
He made bad decisions. He made good decisions. Mostly, he made decisions. Many people learned how to take control of their life, to measure and moderate their decisions. Kovan missed that key learning point. He had no control over his life and kept making choices. He chased thrills and kept going because nothing was more terrifying than being still. Gambling was a lifeline, lovers a convenience, and credits were never too far out of reach.
Decisions do not exist in a vacuum, for they must always have a result. There is no choice without consequence. Kovan found himself deeply in debt, out of control, and too smart for his own good. He examined his choices and decided upon the best course. He would join Starfleet. Kovan was smart and had a knack for languages. Starfleet liked smart people, but it was also a military organization. If he fell back on old habits, then Starfleet would remove him. It’s either stay on the straight or hit his lowest low yet. Kovan knew he needed control. It was always easier when someone else was in charge.
