Biography:

Haanan Silg was born on the planet Trill. His parents were shopkeepers, and no one in their family had ever been selected for Joining. Haanan grew up tending to the shop his parents owned, and assisting them as he could. He was a happy child, and his parents loved him and his younger sister very much.

When Haanan began school, he showed an early aptitude for science and math. As the years passed and he advanced in his studies, it was readily apparent that he was a gifted young Trill with an uncommon scientific mind. He went to University early at the age of sixteen, and began focused studies in both astronomical and chemical sciences. He rapidly garnered a reputation for his keen intellect, as well as for his patience and generosity. He graduated with distinction, and was going to go the Vulcan Science Academy for advanced studies when the Symbiosis Commission asked for a meeting with him and his family.

The Commissioner assigned to meet with Haanan told him and his family that the Commission had selected Haanan for Joining. He would be joined with the Symbiot Beid; an older symbiot who had many prominent scientists as past hosts. The Commissioner further informed them that Haanan had actually been requested by the current Symbiot and Host to be joined with Beid, as they had been impressed by his work so far; and the Host was reaching the end of his time. Haanan’s parents were excited at first, but the Commissioner warned them. “Beid is a strong personality who has lived a many years. The Symbiot’s personality will more than likely be the dominant one after the joining. You must prepare yourselves for this.” Being told that their son would be shunted to the background of his own mind was distressing, but Haanan convinced them that the honor presented to them was not to be ignored. In fact, Haanan had read many of Beid’s works and was anxious to know what the Symbiot knew. His desire for scientific knowledge overshadowed his fear, and he agreed. Haanan began studying the life and history of the Beid Symbiot, hoping that knowledge would help them both through the Joining.

Some few month’s later, Haanan was summoned. Beid’s host had succumbed to old age, and the time for Joining had arrived. The surgery to implant the Symbiot went smoothly, and the waiting period to see if the match would become permanent began. Outside, the medical scans were promising. But it was even better inside the newly joined minds. Haanan and Beid immediately liked each other. As their memories swan together and began to be shared, Haanan’s natural inquisitiveness delighted Beid. And Beid’s memories of scientific research and past hosts were incredible to Haanan. Both Host and Symbiot were ecstatic at the match, and their personalities meshed into a beautiful symbiosis of cooperation and friendship. Once the waiting period was over, Haanan opened his eyes. The Commissioner spoke first and addressed the newly Joined Trill. “How are you feeling, Master Beid?” Haanan looked at him and in a voice not like his normal one, but still recognizable as Haanan, spoke out. “The Host is well… and we are Haanan Beid.” The Commissioner’s eyes flew wide. He had been certain that the Beid Symbiot would have usurped almost total control over the young Trill. But instead, they had truly become one… sharing not only memories and knowledge, but their very voice. Haanan’s parents looked at him with concern, but Haanan Beid rushed to them and took them both in a powerful embrace. “We are so happy to see you!” the Symbiot and Host said. “Haanan has told me so much, I feel as if I have known you as long as he has. You have a most remarkable son. You should be very proud.” and with that the parents and the Joined Trill walked from the room.

Over the next few months, the Joined Trill became an academic powerhouse. As Beid was already a Doctor of differeing fields of study, they continued in this vein. He wrote several works on subspace particle manipulation, antimatter / matter reaction, and convex tachyon field emission tracking. His work was greeted with a great deal of enthusiasm, and the Vulcan Science Academy renewed his previous application for attendance. But Haanan and Beid declined, instead applying directly to Star Fleet Academy. The Symbiot had traveled a great deal over it’s many Host’s lifetimes, but had never had the opportunity to actually study in interstellar space. Apparently, Haanan was the youngest host he had ever been joined with; so the opportunity was ideal for both of them. Star Fleet accepted their application quickly, and the Joined Trill left home and traveled to Earth.

Their time at the Academy was of great enjoyment to them. They spent their first two years learning the basics of service within Star Fleet, and then went into the Science Section. There they spent two years both studying and teaching and developed a singular reputation for data analysis and research. They graduated with distinction, and were assigned to the science vessel USS Copernicus as the Assistant Chief Science Officer. After serving aboard for a year, Beid was given orders to report to the USS Olympic. They were promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade and were selected as the new Chief Science Officer of that vessel.
