FAMILY/ BACKGROUND

Marital Status: Single

Parents: Douglas and Valerie Slade. Douglas is a steamfitter. Valerie is a hairdresser that owns her own business out of the carport in their home.

Siblings: Vanessa had nine brothers. Her parents thought it would be original to name all the boys with the letter D after their father and the girls with a V after their mother. Unfortunately, Vanessa was the only girl born into the family. Her brothers are: Dalton, David, Daniel, Duncan, Dane, Dallas, Dylan, Dexter, and Dennis.

Childhood: She lived in a working-class section of the city and saw that not everyone toed the line in her neighborhood. Her neighborhood was a tight community but that also meant things did not leave the community at times. People struggled with real-world issues like alcoholism, single-parent homes, and people not wanting to seek higher education taking basic jobs immediately out of high school. While at times her neighborhood was tough, it also was filled with lots of love, laughter, and loyalty. Nights were spent playing in the back alleys, sitting on porch stoops, and street cookouts where the residents all set up tables and grilled food shared with everyone. Most of the people in her neighborhood had enough to get by but never enough it seemed to get ahead. People from her home neighborhood still tend to reach out to her as if she still lived in the neighborhood and not stationed at times light years away from them.

Education:

Bunker Hill Community college - Vanessa got her associate’s degree in family services.

University of Massachusetts, Boston campus. - Vanessa double majored in social work and psychology. UMBC is often mistaken to be Boston University but it is not by several thousand credits a year.

Starfleet University - Completed two years for the officer’s program learning star fleet rules and regulations since she already had a degree from UMBC

Psychological History: Vanessa has no psychological issues or conditions. She does, however, get very uncomfortable with silence and being alone. This is mainly due to her unusually large family. With 12 people in the Slade household, there was very little privacy or quiet.
