Personality traits
Nearly all Aurelians suffer from claustrophobia, though the severity of the affliction differs from individual to individual. Skorr tend toward a nomadic lifestyle. They do not suffer claustrophobia as their Aurelian cousins do.
While most Aurelians avoid confrontation, they understand that sometimes it is necessary for survival. The Skorr have developed a very rich and strict society to curb their ancient predatory instincts. They look at the past to learn and have a more peaceful future.
Manika is bold, imaginative, and strong-willed, always finding a way – or making one.
Manika is extraverted, readily enjoys group activities and values social interaction. She tends to be outwardly enthusiastic and express their excitement. She is also intuitive. Expressing that through very imaginative, open-minded, and curious interactions. She values originality and focuses on hidden meanings and distant possibilities. She always thinks, focusing on objectivity and rationality, often dismissing emotions in favor of logic. She is not afraid to judge. She is decisive, thorough, and highly organized. Manika appreciates clarity, predictability, and closure, preferring structure and planning to spontaneity. She is highly assertive, self-assured, even-tempered, and resistant to stress. Personal Information
The Aurelians were an ornithoid species who had been associated with the Federation since at least the mid-23rd century. They originally developed on the planet Skoria and are genetically descended from the Skorr species.
The Skorr were once a race of great warriors with advanced military technology and the ability to breed vast armies rapidly. The Skorr were accepted into the Federation in the late-24th century. This induction was hotly debated as the Skorr had a fearsome reputation as a predatory warrior-like people. For years they had used their advanced military technology to battle across the stars. Paired with their swift maturation and high birth rate, the Skorr were able to rapidly form armies. In the mid-21st century, a religious leader named Alar led his race into a new era of peace. Alar is credited for civilizing the Skorr and permitting their entry into the Federation. Even now, many Skorr are reluctant to take violent actions, viewing it as surrendering to baser instincts. To ensure his teachings and philosophies were not corrupted, Alar preserved his thought patterns in an indurite sculpture known as the Soul of Skorr, which is the most prized relic of the Skorr. The Soul of the Skorr is but one example of the Skorr’s famed stoneworking, which was used to carve their ancestral aeries. Owing in part to their warlike past, which is a lengthy series of conflicts, the Skorr have a fascination for history. They have collected an extensive historical database that has proven useful to scholars across the quadrant.
Alar’s views and lifestyle were not universally accepted by Skorr society. One particular group of Skorr who called themselves “Those who fly on Raptor’s wings” were so adamant in their opposition against Alar that it lead to a nuclear war. After time the portion of Skorr society who rejected Alar’s teachings left the planet for the stars. This migration of Skorr separatists would eventually become known as the Aurelians. Knowledge of the common ancestry of Aurelians and Skorr would obscure into myth over the millennium, and while some Skorr had direct dealings with Aurelians in the 22nd century, the common ancestry would not become widely accepted as fact until the mid-23rd century.
It is believed that the leader of the Skorr-Aurelians migration was a close follower of Alar’s named Sabdar. Sabdar would see the founding of the Aurelian Empire, but was killed by political factions shortly thereafter.
The Aurelians became scientists and historians, leaving behind their combative past after the migration. They had a fascination with people and preferred to stay in one place, unlike the Skorr that stayed nomadic. Some Aurelians were even flightless. They lived in large spherical tree houses and are typically claustrophobic. Their culture is also well known as stone masons. The Aurelians joined the UFP much earlier in the early 23rd century. One of the few avian species to be represented within the Federation, the Aurelians are renowned for their study of history and service within the Federation Science Council. While not unheard of, there are a few Aurelians serving in Starfleet, and those that do most commonly work as science officers. Aurelians dislike enclosed spaces and many suffer from a mild form of claustrophobia, which makes long term service aboard a starship that much more difficult. Most Aurelians that pursue a career in Starfleet request assignments at planetary installations, allowing them to spend their off-duty time outdoors. Their homeworld of Aurelia is an abnormally large Class-M planet covered by large expanses of scrub lands and mild deserts. Aurelians on Aurelia make their homes in natural mesa formations. Though they did not join the Federation until several decades after its formation, Aurelians were known to early Human deep space explorers.
Aurelians and Skorrians finally made peace and began to unify after discovering they were related, and thus there are many, like Manika-Esp, who are actually Aurelian-Skorr hybrids.

Loosely humanoid, Skorr and Aurelians stand taller than most Humans. The Skorr tend to have bright yellow feathers where Aurelians have yellow, orange, brown, gray, and white feathers.and taloned limbs. Stretching out from their backs, they both have wings that can span three meters when fully extended. Despite their height, both are lighter than Humans due to their hollow bones. As a predatory species, Skorr have an excellent sense of sight with visual acuity many times that of a Human. However, they have a poor sense of smell and taste. They have six limbs: two arms, two legs, and two wings that allow them to fly.
Aurelians and Skorr are capable of flight thanks to large and muscular wings. This allows them to quickly traverse distances and avoid obstacles on the ground. They also possess keen sight and a natural directional sense based on the magnetic poles of planetary bodies. The Skorr and some Aurelians have learned to take advantage of their natural flying ability. Manika has mastered her natural flying ability and it gives her a great advantage against ground-based targets.
Aurelians and Skorr are known for their keen vision, hearing, and directional sense. Aurleian-Skorr hybrids often show even more finely honed versions of these traits which gives Manika increased perceptions. She is very muscularly tone and very strong. However due to the hollow/honeycomb nature of her bones, she is susceptible to breaks.

Back Story
Manika-Esp grew up on Alakaram IV. The fourth planet in the home system of the Skorr, it was populated by a Skorr/Aurelian colony that was established after the two peoples rediscovered their shared history. Manika’s mother was Aurelian and her father was Skorrian. She had three nest mates when she was hatched. The Skorr could reproduce proliferously, but the Aurelians had lost that ability, with much smaller layings. This trend carried over into her parents’ union. Skorrians had shifted their militaristic tendencies into a society of strict military hierarchy. Even though both peoples knew that sometimes aggression and force were necessary they did their best to avoid it and curb their predatory instincts that still remained.
Manika was different. She was aggressive and keen. She enjoyed tracking and hunting and any physical pursuit that challenged her. She had thought about joining the Skorr Royal Navy, but she was deemed too aggressive. In school Manika was a smart and quick student. She wasn’t afraid of mistakes either. She learned from them and excelled.
Fledglinghood was not easy for Manika. She was a natural leader of her nest mates and never backed down from anyone. She scoffed at the idea of unquestioning peace with no forethought for contingencies. Her opinions often made her a target of censure and ridicule in school. Manika was undaunted and unswayed about voicing her opinion.
She was unhappy staying in one place and never suffered from claustrophobia like her mother did. She was much like her father that way. He had served briefly in the Federation marines before he was injured and given a medical discharge. He was always proud of the time he had served, so Manika decided that she would join the Marines as well.
Serving in the marine corp was a wake up call for Manika. At home she was always the leader, taking charge of everything and everyone. She may not have been the smartest or most skilled at a task, but she knew how to not give up and motivate others to use their skills. She was never afraid of challenges.
Marine Academy showed her that she was not the top of the flock. Everyone there was like her, she didn’t stand out simply because she was different. It was refreshing to be around so many like minded individuals, but also extremely frustrating to be just a face in the crowd. Her ego took a blow and often led to confrontations with other recruits.
Fellow recruit, Vejef, was a thorn between Manika’s talons. It was clear from the moment they met that their rivalry would be fierce and not friendly. Manika had studied and tutored under her father before leaving for Earth. She knew the regulations forwards and backwards. If she didn’t know, she studied until she did. Vejef took to referring to Manika as ‘Parrot’. Manika had no idea what a parrot was, at first. When she did, as Vejef had planned, she took great offense to being compared to the colorful Earth avian that only had the brains to mimic and not actually think. The rivalry became very heated after that. Vejef was a better tracker and combatant. Manika was a better scout and so skilled with firearms she soon was tagged for sniper school. During a training session Manika ended up with a broken femur and Vejef with a lacerated arm from her talons.
The rivalry caused tensions and dissension between their fellow recruits, drawing proverbial lines in the sand. Leading to a formal dressing down by their CO. After that any direct conflict was handled ‘after hours.’ Manika and Vejef went on to different specialty training schools, putting a pause to the rivalry for a time. Manika attended Sniper school and certified as a sniper, scout, SEER and attained her Recon Certification. She was an excellent student and earned top marks, graduating at the top of her class. She found though that it wasn’t simply because of innate talent. She worked and studied and practiced to earn that distinction.
She proved herself an even tempered and fair leader among her squad. Except when she was questioned by other squad leaders or those not within her direct chain of command. Or on the one occasion she told her platoon leader he was an Ag’ger. A cute, but stupid rodent from Skorria. She told him if he was so stupid as to follow his plan, he could go alone. She also insinuated that the Antican marine had only made it through basic training because the Drill Sergeant’s wife thought he was cute and wanted to tie a horn to his head, like at Alfa 177 canine, and keep him as a pet. This tendency kept her in occasional trouble (as she had learned to curb her behavior most of the time), but she was too talented, too skilled, and too loyal for her direct COs to completely dismiss her despite the headache she caused.
Her service otherwise was exemplary, and opened many opportunities for additional training and positions to prove she had matured past the young recklessly over-confident recruit she had started out as.
