Character Biography

Born to a pair of Vulcan parents, Strom and T’pes, who were both assigned to Earth Spacedock as engineering technicians, Jorik’s life should have been filled with logic and learning like any Vulcan. However, tragedy would befall the family on a vacation to San Francisco shortly after his birth, when a shuttle accident would kill Strom, and gravely injure T’pes. Close friends, Micha and Diane Thoran, would take Jorik in while T’pes was in the hospital, in hopes she would recover and be able to take her son back.

Unfortunately, a few days later, T’pes would succumb to her injuries. Leaving Jorik an orphan. Micha and Diane considered turning the boy over to the Vulcan government to be raised among his people, but the two had come to bond with the young baby during this time. Appealing to the Vulcan High Council to be allowed to keep the boy, Micha and Diane fought hard to be allowed to adopt the child themselves. After nearly a year-long battle, they won, and Jorik became their son.

Raised on Earth, Jorik’s upbringing was riddled with challenges. From learning to manage his intense emotions without logic–a hard challenge that took several years and careful thinking on his part–to learning to ignore the Humans–and Vulcans–who ridiculed him about being raised with emotion in his life. Each time, though he struggled to accept it, he eventually rose above all the challenges he faced, to emerge stronger than ever after them, physically, emotionally, and mentally.

To this end, when the time came to consider careers, Jorik was torn. Both Strom and T’pes, as well as the Thorans, were in Starfleet, so that seemed the obvious choice, but Micha and Diane both told him they’d be happy with whatever he chose. It was when he went to his parent’s graves that his father’s communicator, resting on top of his headstone, that gave Jorik the motivation to enter Starfleet.

Instead of going Engineering, like his biological parents, or security, like his adopted, Jorik went into Navigation and Piloting, taking dual-blocked classes through most of his Academy years, to gain the ability to fill either role onboard a starship. He felt this made him much more valuable, and thus more likely to get accepted on an assignment.

With his time at the Academy over, after a short leave period, Jorik was eager to see which ship he got assigned to, which turned out to be the USS Sentinel.

In an effort to protect himself from accidental telepathic occurrences, Jorik took to wearing gloves all the time from an early age, as he never had the training to control or inhibit his touch-telepathy.
