John was born in Hampshire England and was raised by his mother, a Starfleet medical officer, and his father, a retired engineer. After his Sister was killed aboard the USS Husqvarna when he was fourteen. The exact nature of her death was classified, and John always wanted to know more about what happened to her. After her death, John’s parents tried to push him away from joining Starfleet. He attended Oxford at his Parents’ insistence and majored in anthropology, a field his parents felt secure would keep him from Starfleed. After graduation, however, he found himself as an intern for one of his professors that took him to Kurl. There they had a Starfleet escort and, after a skirmish with Yridian smugglers, his interest in Starfleet was restruck and he enlisted soon afterward, despite his parents’ protests. A skilled fencer and martial artist, part of his focus while studying anthropology was on how fighting styles evolved in various cultures and how those cultures affected their martial arts and vice versa. John is well versed in Historic European Martial Arts, focusing on Broadsword and Rapier within the teachings of Lichtenhauer and Fiore, as well as Tae Kwon Do developed in North Korea. Since venturing out from Earth, he has also studied more alien martial arts and has even begun studying with the Klingon Bat’Leth. He still plans to attempt a doctorate in anthropology and plans to use his time in Starfleet to further his dissertation on Alien styles of combat and what they can teach us about their race and cultures.

2387-2391 - Studying at Oxford
2391-2393 - Graduating from Oxford and interning with his professor at Kurl dig
2393-2397 - officially joins Starfleet and attends Starfleet Academy
2397-2398 - serving aboard a Federation research vessel before requesting a transfer from sciences to security
2398-2399 - return to Academy for further training on Security functions before assigned to the USS Ark Angel

His reasoning for going into security instead of the sciences is that he always held a sense of adventure and likely would have started his career in Starfleet when he was younger and in security from the beginning, had he not been influenced by his parents. Much of his twenties he feels was spent appeasing them and now he wants to do more living for himself. However, he put a great deal of time into his studies and doesn’t want to throw it all away, so he feels this is the combination of those two parts of him. He works on his studies in his free time while still being able to break away from that while on the ship.
