Biography
Karek grew up in a rural town close to the firefalls of Gal Gath’thong. His family, which is of noble origin (his mother’s father is a retired senator) was originally from the southern hemisphere. His mother, Mel’el, is a historian and sometime archaeologist, while his father, Rakath, an accountant and economist, was often away on Remus, working in the administration for the Reman slave mines.

The youngest of three brothers, Karek suffered the bereavement of his two older brothers who died, only a few weeks apart, as soldiers, during campaigns on two separate subjugated worlds in the Romulan Star Empire. Karek developed a deep-held patriotism and imperialist attitude as a way to find meaningfulness in the deaths of his brothers. As such, he values the Star Empire as the rightful ruler over all worlds in the empire, with the Romulan species at the apex of the civilization. He believes in all aspects of the Mnhai’sahe.

He has inherited his father’s suspicion of “lesser species” (i.e., non-Romulans) but his mother’s curiosity for history and interrelations between species, for example, the Vulcan ancestry of the Romulan civilization and species. Karek is proud of Romulan history, culture, and inventions. As a child, he heard tales from older relatives about the Romulan–Federation war. He has been curious about the Federation, its form of government, myriad of cultures, ever since. He regards himself, in private, as an expert on all things Federation (for a Romulan, at least). Know thy enemy is a maxim he has taken to heart.

After the deaths of his brothers, Karek devoted himself to physical exercise. He found it helped him deal with his emotions and process them. He grew strong and became an able martial artist. He exercises regularly, and he regards physical activity to be his form of meditation.

Despite his patriotism and devotion to the cultural norms, he has married. He has not been interested, and has spoken how much he has not had time to devote himself to a wife. Instead, he regards himself married to his position.

Educated at the Romulan Academy, specializing in security, his position on the Rovarran is his second posting. He spent a few years prior on the [name of another ship], in the security department. Prior to his enrolment in the Romulan Academy, he did military service on Remus (following in his father’s footsteps, which made him feel pride) and on Chaltok IV as well as other planets as a soldier. It prided him, also, to honour his two elder brothers’ ultimate sacrifice by doing similar work in the service of the Star Empire.
