Back Story
When Caitlyn was 3 she came down with tuberculous meningitis and it left her blind. Just weeks after she had recovered she was fitted for a VISOR and the connections at her temples surgically implanted. Other than adjusting to seeing in a computerized way compared to colors and textures her childhood was very normal.
Caitlyn never adjusted to the starkness of having the visor off. It always made her incredibly nervous and uneasy to have the visor off. She never got used to moving around without seeing, having to feel her way in the dark and rely on her hearing. Instead she was a very trusting individual who relied on those around her to help during those times.
After high school, Caitlyn entered the Culinary Arts Academy, Switzerland. She excelled in school and her senior year she met Gavin Menton. He was a newly graduated business major who had just taken on his first position with a small international company near Le Bouveret, Switzerland. Gavin swept her off her feet. He was attentive and sweet and very reassuring whenever she had to go without her visor.
After graduation Caitlyn took a job at Raf’s, one of the premier restaurants in New York. She quickly made a name for herself and was taken as an apprentice to the master chef. Caitlyn missed Gavin but they managed to make the long distance work. Until a year later, Gavin proposed and they moved near Cambridge where Gavin had taken on a new job. Caitlyn took a job at The Olive Grove as a chef.
That was when things took a decided turn for the worse. The change was slow at first, but life soon became unbearable. Gavin liked Caitlyn being dependent on him and would often hide her VISOR from her knowing how unsecure she was without it. Eventually she lost her job because she would miss work because he wouldn’t return her VISOR to her. He was an angry and violent man, and Caitlyn had never known it. She learned to stay quiet and not argue when she couldn’t see.
It took Caitlyn a long time to work up the courage to leave Gavin. Then she decided she was going to get prosthetic eyes, to make sure no one could do that to her again. Gavin found out about the surgery, and found out where Caitlyn had gone when she left.
The damage that Gavin inflicted on Caitlyn left her with scars from chemical burns and permanent damage to her optic nerve and Occipital lobe. She would be lost in the darkness for the rest of her life. The damage was too extensive for surgery or prosthetics to help her anymore.
A kind woman, working as a counselor at the hospital (Revna McKenzie), introduced her to The House. An off the grid home for victims of violence and trauma. There, with the help of the other resilience, she learned to navigate, live, work, and be independent again. She learned how to cook again. Gavin was sentenced to prison time. Now, along with a few other members of The House they have moved to Oed with the new McKenzie-Edman clan to start another home to help others.
