Character Biography

A child prodigy Rachel Went from the Family farm in the Scottish highlands at the age of 17 to study medicine in Oxford Medical School where she took part in the six-year Program to become a General Surgeon fit for service onboard a Starship. At the age of 22 she was accepted in an extremely prestigious Student exchange programme where she transferred to the Andorian Imperial Military Medical Institution, which she affectionately refers to as ‘Amy’. She studied there for four years where she became a certified combat-medic and an honorable member of the Andorian Imperial Guard, although the title was little more than honorary. As she turned 26 she transferred back to earth and enlisted in Starfleet where she spent eight months in Starfleet Academy learning Starfleet procedures and the like before graduating and receiving the rank of Lieutenant.

Rachel is an odd duck. Most of the time it seems as if she’s not all there and seems to have a constant blank stare and friendly smile. However, at a towering 195 Centimeters, Rachel is an intimidating person to face. Besides being a health nut her stint at the ‘Amy’ she also became somewhat of a fitness fanatic. The strict exercise regiment of the Andorians stuck with her making her even more formidable. It wasn’t until she studied at ‘Amy’ that she was taught combat which she excelled at. Unfortunately, a little too much.

During her graduation from ‘Amy’, she assaulted a high ranking member of the Andorian high command, dislocating his shoulder, breaking his nose and fracturing three ribs. For some reason, during the disciplinary hearing, she was acquitted of assault charges and the incident removed from her permanent record. During questioning with the Human ambassador to Andoria she simply referred to the General as ‘The Handsy Blues’.

She received a commendation for bravery and actions beyond the call of duty during her third year on Andoria. During a weekend break, several Xenophobic Andorian fanatics set explosives in a mine that was being visited by a group of schoolchildren in the town that she was stationed in. These were children of members of the Andorian Diplomatic corps. Rachels’ team was the first responders and initiated rescue operations. When an opening presented itself Rachel entered the mines and personally carried out six children and two adults before Rescue teams arrived. Her entire squad was presented with the Blue Ribbon of Bravery for their actions. Rachel is currently the only human to have received it. It is a small blue band that she affectinately ties to her belt.

During her time on Andoria, she developed a slight mistrust of Tellarites due to the influence of her compatriots. It was also influenced by her mistrust of people who don’t smile which is also what leads to her mistrust of Vulcans. Besides the fact that they wouldn’t admit her to the Vulcan Medical Academy for being human. Despite being better than any Vulcan Doctor, in her opinion.

Her little brother Richard was killed during the Xindi Incident. He was traveling in South America during the attack and was in a small village on the outskirts of the beam, dying from his wounds several days later. This led to a deep hatred for both the Xindi and Space Weapons. This led to trouble during her weapons training but she got passed it after considerable effort.

Brilliant and eccentric, Rachel seemed like a perfect fit for Starfleet. During her stay at Oxford, she was approached by an Admiral Mandal of Starfleet Medical who gave Guest Lectures there during summers. He took her under his wing, making her his protege. He got her in the student transfer programme. He saw in her the future of Starfleet Medicine. Rachel considers him to be a father figure, someone she trusts without fail.

She had been vegetarian bordering on veganism for her last year at Oxford and her entire stint on Andoria. This was due to a bet she made with a fellow at Oxford that believed that one couldn’t survive with Andorians without meat and animal products. She, in the heat of the moment, wagered that she could and so she did. She considers it the most difficult task of her life as being raised on a Scottish farm she had a true fondness for anything meat related. However, after returning to Earth she was quick to pick up her meat-eating habits. She has a terrifyingly big appetite that she offsets with an exercise regiment that gives her her incredible fit status.

She has an irrational fear of Eggs and flightless birds. On Andoria she received the Nickname ‘Salmon’ due to her pink complexion and often blank stare. Well, she had the Andorian version of the nickname but she never repeats it due to it sounding like a fairly impolite word in her native tongue. She got her Andorian friends to call her Salmon, or Sal, instead of the ‘other’ word.

She is fairly certain that she is a functioning Alcoholic but doesn’t want to do anything about it. She realized this at the age of 23. She has had an alcoholic drink every day for almost ten years. However, she was forced to stop drinking to be allowed to join Starfleet. Admiral Mandal made her go to AA meetings for the year she spent on earth before graduating.
