The death of his friend, a tragedy that haunted him through his teen years, was a direct result of a reckless stunt McKenzie had encouraged. Though he was never blamed, he blamed himself every day, feeling that his wild nature had cost someone their life. This loss became a turning point for McKenzie, forcing him to confront the consequences of his actions. It wasn’t just a desire to make something of his life that drove him—it was the need to ensure that no one else would suffer because of his impulsiveness.

McKenzie, with a newfound desire to make something of his life signed up to Starfleet Academy much to the surprise of both of his parents.

When he joined Starfleet Academy, McKenzie sought a way to redeem himself, to somehow make amends for the life that was lost. During a training exercise where a fellow cadet was critically injured, McKenzie had a flashback to that dark moment in his past. But this time, he had a chance to act differently. His quick thinking and calm under pressure saved the cadet’s life, and in that moment, McKenzie realized that nursing was his way forward. He could heal, save, and protect others where he once failed his friend.

By becoming a nurse, McKenzie wasn’t just choosing a career—he was choosing to turn his guilt into something constructive. He believed that by dedicating himself to saving lives, he could honor the memory of his friend and atone for his past mistakes. Nursing became a way for McKenzie to redeem himself and find peace, one patient at a time
