(3/5/7)
Scott Smith has always been a scientist at heart and after his youth spent growing up in Gary, Indiana, he averaged his way through the academy and was awarded postings throughout the fleet doing mundane experiments with a robotic efficiency that bordered on the unsettling. His supervisors were amazed at how he simply was able to perform task after task without hesitation or expressing interest, as more often than not he’d analyze data with the enthusiasm of someone watching the paint dry on a tan wall with highlights of sand and biscuit.
Scott’s reports were legendary in their capacity to induce narcolepsy. So much so that he has been the case of numerous studies both by Starfleet Medical and Starfleet Intelligence. The former’s study focused on his ability to induce a coma in patients without the use of pharmaceuticals and the latter’s study on how to weaponize boredom and inflict it on their enemies. The most groundbreaking discoveries, when filtered through Scott’s unique blend of lifelessness and stodgy tedium, became as exciting as a spreadsheet categorizing the various shades of beige. He once discovered a new life form capable of interdimensional travel and described it in his report as “a biological anomaly exhibiting spatial displacement capabilities.” The Chief Science Officer onboard nearly self-administered a hypospray of adrenaline just to stay awake through the debriefing.
Off duty, a few of Scott’s hobbies included measuring the time it takes to boil water (in a series of 6 identical beige kettles), measuring the time it takes for the water to cool to ambient temperature, knitting socks (usually with beige yarn but if he was feeling adventurous, he’d use khaki instead), and reading stellar cartography reports while listening to turbo lift music set to low. He was, in essence, the human embodiment of a stale potato. Yet, somehow, this walking, talking sedative remained in Starfleet as either a testament to his scientific competence or the dire need for someone to bore hostile aliens into submission. He was so incredibly ordinary, so utterly unremarkable, that he became almost fascinating in his blandness.
