Background:
Nevin’s parent and sister died in the closing stages of the Cardassian Occupation when Nevin was a baby, so he never knew them. He went to live with his uncle who subjected him to a range of abuse (mental, physical & sexual). At Age 10, Nevin was rescued from this life by a Cardassian Doctor (Kotan Pa’dar) who had settled on Bajor after being exiled for aiding the Bajoran Resistance. Pa’dar and his wife took Nevin in and raised him as though he was their own son, encouraging him to embrace his Bajoran heritage.

Despite Nevin’s traumatic youth, he has excelled in his study at the Academy, passing his classes with honours. Nevin is a gifted linguist, and has the potential to make a fine command officer someday.

Nevin had a difficult time coming to terms with his sexuality, however Nevin’s best friend, Dakin Tara was already pregnant with his child. When her parents disowned her, Dr. Pa’dar took her in, and was accompanying her on a shuttle to join Nevin on the Olympic when there was an accident. Luckily the Olympic arrived in time to rescue Pa’dar and and Tara’s unborn child, however Tara died of her injuries leaving Nevin as a single father.

Medical:
Since being nursed back to health by his Foster Father, Nevin has maintained a healthy lifestyle and is in relatively good health with no known allergies.

Psychological:
Whilst the horrors of Akorem’s childhood may never be forgotten, it is not anticipated that they will interfere with his duties. It is however feared that they may affect his personal relationships. It was noted that while at the Academy, Nevin was more comfortable around non-Bajoran people, and that many of his friends were female. Most notably, his earcuff does not bear the Akorem family crest. Instead it is plain, uncrested, which in Bajoran culture would indicate he was an illegitimate child and of no family.
