Heathcliff Rinker

Character Biography

Heathcliff Gustav Rinker was born in Austria in the European Union on Earth. He is the eldest of four children of Michel and Astrid Rinker. Michel was a religious man who served as both a minister and later as a councilman in his home district. Astrid was a physician who specialized in obstetrics. He parents divorced when he was 18 as they weren’t a well paired personality-wise. The divorce had some turbulence, but over the years they have settled most of their differences and frequently celebrate holidays together in the company of their children as often as they spend them separately.
Heathcliff was considered a very bright young man and graduated primary school early at 16, was further educated at the University of Vienna then Lübeck medical school where he studied psychiatry. During his internship years, he turned down Bellevue Hospital in the United States, for Star-Fleet as they needed doctors to serve during the Dominion War. He, like many during the war was present during many battles and defeats most notably that of the Battle of Betazed where he was trapped behind ‘enemy’ lines. Heathcliff being a doctor received ‘preferential’ treatment from the Dominion overloads and avoided close observation and imprisonment because yet again someone needed his medical skills.
The war ended while he remained on Betazed, he resigned his commission briefly so he could study psychology, under the Star-Fleet continuing education grant, with a number of the Betazed masters. Not having empathetic or telepathic abilities he honed a keen skill evaluating moods and a fairly unique direct, gestalt therapeutic approach. At the conclusion of his education he returned to Federation active duty serving at Star-Fleet psychiatric on Betazed then Earth.
He rose to the position of Assistant Clinical Director of Star-Fleet before losing interest in the monotony and politics of a desk position. He transferred to active duty on the Atlantis five years ago and has been aboard ever since.
