Calvin was born on a colony world. Life on it was hard, like most colonies, but the people were happy. Unfortunately this happy colony was not to survive. The survey team failed to identify an unusually large insect that hibernated for ten years then swarmed destroying virtually all life on the planet. This now included the colonists. The devastation was quick and most died within a few days, but some of the remaining adults were able to reconstruct one Conestoga to house the children for a return trip to Federation space.
Calvin survived but he was now orphaned. Returning all the way back to Earth, he was adopted by a generous family. Despite the supportive environment Calvin found himself rebelling and getting into trouble. He fought with his parents and peers and despite his intelligence he was not particularly successful in school.
When he was 18 he joined the colonial marines, one of the few options he had. Ironically his first mission was to protect a colony from an incursion of space borne insects. He was promoted quickly through the enlisted ranks and ultimately joined a Special Forces unit, primarily hostage rescue. Calvin for the first time was at peace, despite the aggressive nature of his job. He had finally found a family.
Then the Dominion War happened. He and his unit served for many years taking the most dangerous missions before tragedy struck. On an infiltration of a Cardassian base most of his team was killed or captured. Calvin spent six months undergoing the psychological cruelty of the Cardassian secret police. They thought he knew more than he did and they wanted his secrets. The few Calvin had he would not divulge even after he knew those secrets were no longer useful.
Deluding his captor one night he escaped on a Dominion freighter, which was the worst mistake he could have made. He was recaptured by the Jem’Hadar. The Jem’Hadar prison camp was less psychologically abusive but was physically destructive. Following his time with the Cardassians he no longer had the will to keep on fighting. Within the first month he was prepared to die he only needed to find the means. Fortunately, before something else tragic could happen the war ended.
Calvin was repatriated, but he was a broken man. He spent years in psychological and physical rehab and even at the conclusion of this arduous process he was deemed unfit to return to duty. Knowing nothing else Calvin bounced around as a mercenary, but found the missions he was offered offended his sensibilities. That is when he was found by his former CO in a Rigillian mining camp as a security guard. His former CO was saddened to see Calvin. If anything he was worse off than before. Without the camaraderie of service Calvin was alone, had nothing to live for.
Convinced that the marines would dredge up too many memories, it was suggested that he join Starfleet. Fearing similar results in his psych testing he went through OCS (officer candidacy school) first hoping to learn some additional discipline. Surprisingly he graduated with honors and passed all his testing both academic and psychological. Calvin continues to display the hard edge of a long term combat vet. He is both guarded and emotional and perhaps most surprising of all, considering his vocation, tired of fighting.
