The Khitomer Massacre
In the year 2346, the Romulans staged an attack on a Klingon colony on the planet Khitomer. Later to be known as the Khitomer Massacre, this brutal attack wiped out nearly all of the 4000 Klingons inhabiting the colony. Of the few survivors that remained, most were quickly captured by the Romulans and taken to a prison camp on the planet Carraya IV.
One of the survivors taken to the prison camp was a young woman, Chaya K’Elenya. She had managed to survive the massacre along with her two sisters, although the rest of her family had been destroyed. She was fourteen years old.
Chaya and Isaake
Hidden from the outside world by its remote jungle location, the area surrounding the prison camp was often visited by supply pilots. One of these pilots was a young Japanese man, Isakke Nakuto. On a mission to deliver essential supplies to the prison colony, he met and quickly fell in love with Chaya K’Elenya and initially attempted to smuggle her off the planet with him. But when it became impossible for Chaya’s sisters to accompany her, she declined the chance to escape. Isaake then abandoned his ship and took up residence in the jungle on Carraya IV where he could maintain his secret relationship with Chaya.
The couple were eventually blessed with a daughter, Mirai, and then three years later with a second daughter, Kara. Over the years, the Klingon captives and their Romulan guards learned to live in peace and Isaake was able to come out of hiding and begin to enjoy a normal life with his family.
However, although the Klingons had forged an uneasy truce with their Romulan captors in public, in private some of them swore a pledge to never forget what the Romulans had done to their families and ancestors in the massacre, and to teach this history to their children.
Kara was a quiet and studious child, who looked up to her sister, Mirai, and often allowed herself to be led astray by her more rebellious sibling.
She discovered a natural ability for engineering, initially developing these skills so that she could build and modify craft for her sister to fly. Together, the girls engaged these ships in a variety of purposes, not all of them approved by their parents.
Worf and liberation
In 2369, when Kara was ten years old and Mirai thirteen, the Carraya IV prison colony was discovered by the Klingon Worf, who offered to liberate any Klingon prisoners who wished to leave. Mirai attempted to go with him but was stopped by her parents.
Shortly after this event, Isaake and Chaya, realizing that they were denying their children their true destinies by keeping them hidden on Carraya IV, decided to leave the planet and instead settle on Archanis IV, one of the few places they felt they would be equally accepted by Klingons and Humans.
The Dominion War
In 2373, when the Dominion war broke out, Mirai immediately joined the Klingon forces as a pilot. Kara, as always, followed her, partly because she also wanted to fight alongside her Klingon brothers and sisters, but mostly so that she could keep an eye on Mirai.
The girls both returned from the war unharmed but now seeking a life amongst the stars. They found employment for a while with a group of smugglers and renegades, but finally enlisted in Starfleet as an alternative to being punished for their lawbreaking while with the smugglers.
After a few setbacks, both Mirai and Kara graduated from Starfleet Academy with flying colours. Their first posting was aboard the USS Excalibur, where it had been decided to keep the sisters together as a team. Time would reveal this to be a costly mistake.
Initially the girls performed well in their duties as Pilot and Engineer, but Mirai’s inability to follow orders soon began to cause problems. Kara, loyal as ever to her family, would always go to great lengths to defend her sister and protected her as well as she could by tampering with ships logs and destroying evidence.
