History:
Oliver Pierce was born 27 years ago in the small East Bay town of Hercules on Earth, to a loving family of three. His father, also named Oliver Travis Pierce, was an American architect, while his mother was an officer in Starfleet from Odense, in Denmark. This meant that, while she always made time for subspace talks and used her leave liberally, Oliver and his older sister Corine often didn’t see their mother in person for months, or even once two years, at a time. The family, however, did their best to make the situation work, and by all accounts they were happy.

From an early age he displayed an aptitude for mechanics, taking up the hobby of fixing and maintaining Old Earth automobiles as a past time. His education and life progressed relatively normally into his early teens, with him excelling in early engineering courses, though he also showed a level of confidence and peer leadership that his teachers praised. He also found a knack for arts and sports alongside his other interests. Throughout his early education, Oliver proved to be quite a star pupil.

When Oliver was 14, while his mother was planetside on shore leave, the family decided to take a family trip to a nearby star-system, though limited travel accommodations meant that the family of four had to split two two-person shuttles to make the trip. It was during this trip that the shuttle containing Oliver and his father encountered mechanical troubles, and crashed into a barely habitable moon outside the flight path. Oliver’s father, with limited pilot training, was unable to control the craft to any meaningful degree during the accident, and the shuttle began to break up. Oliver Pierce Sr. died on impact.

When Oliver regained consciousness, he found not only the corpse of his father, but that his right hand had been torn off in the crash. He narrowly avoided bleeding out by utilizing the barely intact medkit in the shuttle. Just staving off total panic, he began attempting to fix the emergency beacon that was badly damaged. With no surviving tools and no computer guidance, the grueling process took three days to complete, but eventually, Oliver got the beacon up and running. When the rescue crew found Oliver a day after the signal began sending, he was filthy and starving, having no survival skills of his own and no surviving rations.

After a brief stay in a hospital, he declined an organic replacement for his hand, opting instead for a mechanical one that he’d be able to do his own alterations and tuning to. Though his doctors and family objected, his mother eventually came to the conclusion that he could always get a new one later, should he want to remove the metal hand.

After returning home, his family began the process of healing from the loss of Oliver’s father, though Freja’s career still kept her away often. In their father’s absence, Corine and Oliver began to rely on eachother more and more, ultimately becoming very close.

Though Oliver returned to education quickly, much of his former interest and aptitude had faded. He no longer displayed any interest in sports or arts, and far from being a class leader he began to turn inward. Engineering was the only subject in which he continued to excel, and at his mother’s urging, he perused it into Starfleet Academy.

Oliver did well at the Academy, placing highly in his class upon graduation. Strangely enough, however, his success wasn’t uniform in his chosen subjects. Though he was one of the most successful cadets at mechanical engineering courses, hitting his stride whenever he could work hands on with the parts of a system, he barely scraped by any course that dealt with software, or more abstracted engineering courses. He and his small group of friends began to jokingly refer to him as, “the glorified mechanic”.

Psychology:
While he is mostly able to function day-to-day, perhaps keeping to himself too much or spending excessive time in the holodeck, Oliver does have certain difficulties psychologically. His misfortune at a young age has lead to a development of PTSD around the issue, and he suffers from panic attacks when inside shuttlecraft. While he has displayed an ability to suffer through such issues when no other travel option is feasible, he is still extremely anxious around such craft.
