Jay has two visible scars, one on the underside of his chin which is about an inch long, and one on the back of his right hand which is about two inches in diameter. Most people consider him to be average when it comes to his looks. He is not overly cocky, but he does come across as very confident the instant he walks into a room.

Jay is not an overly social person. He is comfortable in crowds and large groups, but often prefers to be by himself if he is not on duty. When on duty, he exhibits a very nurturing/relater personality which he uses to quickly to establish rapport with patients. If you are someone Jay considers a friend he is fiercely loyal and protective. He also has been known to be very sarcastic, but good natured with his comments.

History:
Jay was born to Earl and Marie Westland, both public school educators, on Earth. He is originally from the Northwestern part of North Carolina in what is commonly referred to as the Appalachia Region. He is an only child.

Throughout his school career he excelled in science which is not surprising considering that both of his parents were science teachers. All of his instructors considered him to be gifted and one school counselor even referred to him as a prodigy. Because of his work he was able to finish his public school education at just 15 years old.

Shortly after completing school, he parents were tragically killed in accident. Jay spent the next 6 months living with his paternal grandmother, which did not go very well. Jay would slide into and out of severe depression events and was often verbally cruel to people who tried to help him. Nothing helped until his father’s brother, Rowan, moved back home and took him in. Rowan, was a former Starfleet Marine who helped Jay come to terms with what had happened and to start to move forward with his life.

At sixteen, Jay left the Appalachia region for parts unknown on a personal quest to “find himself.” His uncle Rowan supported his decision and even helped him prepare for the trip. Remaining family members felt like it was a waste of time and talent, but Jay felt it was something he had to do. Besides, the only person he had ever felt close to in his family, other than his parents, was his uncle Rowan.

After two years, Jay returned home. He never discussed his travels with anyone other that his uncle who had been so supportive. Unfortunately, only a month after returning, his uncle passed away, but this time Jay was at peace with what happened and vowed he would always remembered the lessons that his uncle had taught him about life, how the world works, and how to take control of your own destiny.

At 18 Jay applied for and was accepted into Starfleet Academy, directly into the medical program. His assigned roommate was Nathan Roberts. Nathan, his twin sister Raina, and Jay quickly became inseparable friends. Nathan was on the engineering tract and Raina was on the medical tract. The three became so close that they thought of each other as family and even Nathan and Raina’s parents thought of Jay as part of the family.

Jay completed the medical program at The Academy in 6 years and graduated with certifications in both general medicine and emergency medicine. He was also excited to learn both he and Nathan had been assigned to same ship for their first assignment. Raina had received the assignment she wanted as well and all seemed to be going well for the trio.

Seven months into their first assignment, an incident on the ship that both Jay and Nathan were assign to left Nathan badly injured. Jay was the physician on duty when the incident occurred and responsible for all three of the crew members who had been injured. Even though he tried everything he could, he lost his friend, his brother.

Starting shortly after the incident, Jay started volunteering for missions as an embedded doctor within Marine ground units. His deployments were often very short, but he gained a wealth of knowledge from all of the different things he had seen and had to treat on the fly. He earned several citations and commendations for his actions, but he really didn’t care about them. All he cared about was saving his patients.

Recently he has been trying get an assignment that will put him on the same ship, or at least close to Raina.
